I was recently diagnosed with type. I do a lot of exercise mainly weights, some cardiovascular.
I've got a huge appetite and was used to eating what I wanted when I wanted.

I'm trying to find out what snack would fill me up, is healthy and doesnt mean I need an additional insulin shot.

Thanks for any advice

Hi,

It is quite hard to resist to snack or grab something out the cupboard when your used to eating whenever you like, without thinking about insulin injections or testing your BG.

As for snacks are you referring to snacking before and exercise or in general?

If your snacking before exercise you could have something that does contain carbohydrates as you may find the exercise will compensate for the rise in blood glucose. Same applies for after exercise as exercise will affect your body for a while after, especially if it's strenuous exercise.

Be aware though exercise CAN make your BG's rise though, this is dependant on the person and what type of exercise your doing.

I find that quick bursts of exercise, particularly something that gets your heart rate going, will push my BG's up, they eventually come back down, so i tend not to snack before exercise if this is the case..

If its something like walking or football for longer than 30 mins, it tends to make my BG's drop, so i have a snack before hand, half a sandwich or a banana. With football it tends to be glucose tablets before i start and in half time.

If you want something carb free you could have something like carrot sticks or cucumber, i tend to eat these with dips.

Check out the recipes part of the forum, you may find some good ideas there.

Hi
thanks for the reply. Interesting you mention that BG can rise or decrease after exercise. Today I had relatively low BG before exercise so I ate a peanut butter and banana sandwhich 30 mins before I exercised.. After excerise my BG kept on rising for the next 2 hours -- just like you said!

I did quite a hard weights work out and wandered whether weights affect BG differently than cardiovascular exericse (like running or football.)
I'll experiment and post my results!

Thanks again

Hi Joe72,

Try reading http://www.runsweet.com for some good info on diabetes and sport. Broadly though, if you are exercising at 75% plus of maximum heart rate, you will most likely see a rise in BG for a couple of hours, before seeing a lowering effect for a couple of days. In that case, I really wouldn't worry too much about a rise after exercise as you will see the benefit afterwards.

http://runsweet.com/BodyBuilding.html also gives someone's story about T1 and serious weight training.
