Hey..i am type 2 diabetic and i have been following a low carb diet..no spuds..no bread..etc..only brown rice and sweet spud with the odd packet of crisps!! But i read up about The Body Rescue Plan, a 12 week eating, mindset and fitness plan and bought the book and have now been on a detox of no carbs at all...only sweet spud is allowed on this first week and only white meat and fish and fruit and veg with a fistful of nuts and dried fruits as a snack.

I am on insulin before breakfast and dinner and my blood sugars before this detox were around 6-7 before meals and maybe up to 10-11 after meals. (we were/are still trying to find the correct levels i need throughout the day).

I have been on this detox of no carbs at all since Monday and my blood sugar levels have risen to 11-11.2 before meals and around 11.5 after meals.

I am not having carbs, alcohol, coffee, sugar, snacks, wheat and gluten and dairy. (i had to cut out my special K and banana for breakfast arghhhh).

Can anyone explain to me why this has happened? I thought with no carbs at all my sugar levels would be really low??

I am totally baffled as to why they have risen so high.

Thanks :)

So, what does this detox actually entail? What are you eating and drinking?

Basically a days menu in this first detox week is this...
Breakfast: 2 egg and mushroom omelette or boiled egg and asparagus soldiers.
Snack: a fistful of dried fruit and nuts...(only what you can fit in a fist).
Lunch: chicken or prawn salad..no dressings. Fruit but no bananas.
Snack: dried fruit and nuts again.
Dinner: Sweet potato chips (homemade cooked in coconut oil with paprika) or baked with fish or a chicken breast...cooked with lemon and ginger. Fruit.

NO wheat or gluten, alcohol, dairy, sugar, caffeine or processed foods.
Everything is cooked with spray coconut oil as no other fats are allowed in this week.

In the second week i can add a handful of carbs a day...brown rice, couscous, wholemeal pasta or potatoes..i can also have bananas and yogurt and smoothies.

I do feel better in myself as my diet could have been better before...the insulin makes me hungry alllllll the time but i am finding with less carbs and more protein i am not so hungry but i am a little concerned about my sugar levels.

There's a lot of fruit there, which can be tricky, and sweet potato is pretty borderline for many.

Provided you are otherwise well; no infections or heavy stress, it could be that the exercise is just not suiting you.

Dried fruit has a lot of sugar in it, something in the news recently suggesting it is higher than haribo! Might be worth swapping for fresh or frozen berries instead? Avocado could also be a good alternative.

I am only having 10 little dried cranberries, 3 plain cashew nuts, 4 almonds and a small amount of sunflower seeds twice a day but i will take your advice and stop the cranberries...ughhh...thought i was doing well...i would rather have a packet of crisps to be honest lol.
I dont think its the exercise as i was using an exercise bike before i started on this plan.

I will go to see my diabetic nurse on friday (if there is an available appt of course)

Thanks for the advice :)

Have you started any new medications? I just found out one of my BP meds has a negative effect on blood sugar and was driving up my numbers about 15 points mg/dl

No new meds but since i cut out the dried fruit and the nakd bars (which are full of dried fruit) my blood sugars have settled down again :)
