If you look at the Venn chart of their test methods, they tested 3 out of 4 conditions, so leaving out a critical set of parameters. Their test methodology is heavily flawed. They did not show that coffee before breakfast in normal sleep pattern had any effect, so this negates their conclusions. Actually, it is fairly obvious. Caffeine is a stimulant, so will trigger a surge in epinephrine (adrenaline hormone) as the 'hit' and this directly causes the Krebs Cycle to switch from glucose storage mode to glucose use mode. If you are not engaging in fight or flight exercise, then this stops the body burning up the glucose, so bgl levels will rise. It is not insulin resistance, it is normal body response to a stimulant. Had they demonstrated that the normal sleep pattern subjects did not show this effect, then their study would have been of use. As it stands it was a waste of time and money. Edit to add: they should also have tested using another caffeine drink such as Red Bull to see if it is coffee or any caffeine drink. Tea would also do the same job. as would Pro Plus tablets.
