Well, it is a very diffucult question... Some sciencetist had insulin about 10 years before Banting, but they've never tried to give it to human. Banting didn't know about this research and discovered insulin wiht Best, but it wasn't so pure and had toxic side-effect. J. B. Collip (the person being beaten in this picture) purified insulin and made it safe for people. When Collip said that he purified the extract Banting and Best asked him "How did you do it?" Collip replied "I have desided not to tell you". Then Banting tried to throttle him. The relations in the team of discoverers of insulin was very interesting)

You mean Dr. Frederick Banting, of course. (Banting for many on here means William Banting, who published a book about his success with Low Carb in 1863).

From The Canadian Encyclopedia:

By the spring of 1922, the Toronto researchers — Banting, Charles Best, J.B. Collip and their supervisor, J.J.R. Macleod, were able to announce the discovery of insulin. In 1923, Banting and Macleod received the Nobel Prize for one of the most important, and most controversial, breakthroughs in modern medical history.

Yes, I mean Dr Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin)
But William Banting is cool too)

They were distant relatives, did you know that?

When I first saw the use of the name Banting as a synonym for diet, I was very surprised. Why do you use the name of the person who allowed diabetics to eat as many carbohydrates as they want as a synonym for a low-carb diet? And then I found out that it wasn't about Frederick, but about William

I've occasionally wondered whether those two Bantings were related at all, but never got round to checking! As an avid low carbing T2 I've been more interested in Mr Corpulent Low Carb Banting than Dr Insulin Discover Banting though...

And @pdmjoker - I had a good snigger at the idea of Prof Di A Beaties...

I do not know who discovered insulin

but I know someone uses it
