I am posting this in the hope that it may help some undiagnosed diabetics to avoid the perils of ketone acidosis.
Throughout my adult life I have needed spectacles for distance, with a fairly constant prescription of about 2 dioptres.
Then, at the age of 61, I realised that my eyesight had rapidly changed.
At a hastily-arranged eye test, the optician confirmed that my eyesight had changed significantly in both eyes and my new prescription was about 3 dipotres, i.e. four 0.25 dioptre steps different to before.
Five weeks later I was admitted to hospital as a newly-diagnosed diabetic, with astronomical levels of blood-sugar and ketones.
Apparently the optical properties of the lenses in our eyes vary according to the amount of glucose sloshing around in our bodies.
And so if a relative or friend tells you that their distance vision has changed significantly in both eyes, it might be advisable for them to get checked for diabetes.
Incidentally, now that I am on insulin injections I can see distance moderately clearly without spectacles, and I cannot use the £200 worth of new-prescription spectacles that I bought!
