I've only just cme across this, and haven't read it yet myself, but here's the latest from the DIRECT Study, as published today:

the DIRECT Study

Very interesting, I'm still looking for the full article and trying to avoid paying for it (mean? probably LOL). I did find the following sentence especially interesting.

This study demonstrates that β cell ability to recover long-term function persists after diagnosis, changing the previous paradigm of irreversible loss of β cell function in type 2 diabetes.

The recent TV program "The Fast Fix" claimed to reverse type II diabetes by weight loss was flawed in two ways. It overlooked the fact that the low carb (I think the meal replacements they used were 40gms each, so still 120gms per day) was why their HbA1c results after 8 weeks was so good. Their BG must have dropped as soon as they started. They were taken off medication straight away so they must have recognised that their BG would drop straight away, or at least soon after. They didn't take or tell the viewer of BG during the eight weeks. There was also no check to see what would happen if they ate the way they had before the trial. They didn't even do a c-pep never mind measuring beta cell activity.

However the one sentence I've indicated above does indeed change things substantially.

I have the .pdf, but it's too large to post here, so I'll see what else I can find. I still haven't had a moment to read it, so still can't comment further on the contents.

I appreciate that's sort of giving the sizzle but not the (LC) sausage, but there we go.

I can't get too excited about this sentence:
This study demonstrates that β cell ability to recover long-term function persists after diagnosis, changing the previous paradigm of irreversible loss of β cell function in type 2 diabetes.
because it doesn't distinguish between beta cells dead from too high blood glucose concentrations, and beta cells that have stopped producing insulin due to fat. It also sidesteps the questionable concept of beta cell regeneration, and avoids the question of whether the ND is of any use at all to someone without a fatty liver.
