The Metformin mince

Hi folks
Any hints and tips to avoid the dreaded metformin diarrhoea attacks?
I got them when I first started on Metformin, they calmed down with the slow release version and I only had one if I had missed a tablet. Recently I've had them completely out of the blue for no apparent reason. I've taken up jogging to improve my health and fitness and on two occasions have been "caught short", ending up in an embarrassing mess; even when I have "been" before I set out (TMI I know). Has anyone else found a way to cope with it?

There are various tips . to taking them with a meal or at different times. Others who are still taking them will be along soon, and let you know how they cope.
I had to stop taking them, I felt constantly sick and had the sudden trots too

Good evening @Ribann50 my friend well the first 3 weeks (2 a day x 500g) with food, that I took them I had quite a few problems but I stuck it out because my fear at that time shocked and anxious as I was, that not controlling my diabetes and getting complications in the future was bigger than the fear of how they made me feel, but I persevered and all is OK now.as they helped me a lot,and now thanks to all my friends advice and support on this forum,I have cut one tablet out and now only take one a day at midday

Hi @Ribann50 - You are not suited to taking Metformin be it the Standard or Slow Release version. So my advice would be to go and see your GP and/or the Diabetes Nurse. There are other Diabetic tablets that you could be prescribed, so don't suffer these unpleasant effects, I cannot tell you to stop as we are not allowed to advise you to do that! But, I would not take anymore!

Try varying the times you take it and maybe you'll find a time that suits you.. I've found I can only take it first thing in the morning. if I take it any other time I get the same effect you do - without any warning.

Carbs and metformin can sometimes disagree with each other , and may cause the runs - see: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045911.php, and scroll right down to Side Effects. The only couple of times I ever had the runs with standard metformin was after I'd started low carbing and ate meals higher in carbs than I should have done, one of which included spaghetti.

But don't necessarily blame metformin - if you east or drink anything in quantity with sugar alcohol type sweeteners (those with names ending in -itol, except usually xylitol and erythritol which should be OK), many of these can actually have an equally unpleasant and disastrous explosive effects on your nether regions too. So it may be worth checking if you've increased consumption of anything that may contain one of these sweeteners.
