The Pump

Sorry to bring this up again.
I cannot for the life of me see how the pump is any better than the pen,
I take an in injection at meals and then the lantus at 7pm every night and thats me till the next day a couple of finger pricks 9pm and 11pm.

That leaves me every night to have a normal ( as near normal ) time, I think if i had a pump I would catch it on things pull the needle out etc.

I have good control and can see the benefits for people who have not got good control, but for me I think the pump would be a hassle.

after reading a good few posts I thought I would come back and say more about the pump.

The benefits are obvious for babies toddlers and all children, I now think that all funding for pumps should go to this group first, it made me shudder the thought of a 2 year old getting needles stuck in them 3 or 4 times a day when a pump only does it once every 3 days.

So even if I could benefit from a pump I think kids would benefit more and its just a shame that the funding is not there.

I really feel for all you parents that have to administer insulin to your children, the only positive thing I can think of saying is the fact that your children are young and this is 2010' they maybe be the ones to see a cure, imagine if that was 10 years away, then they would have their teenage years and diabetic free adulthood to look forward to' would that not be something great.
best wishes.

HI Pavman,

I have a pump...and love it. I agree with you on 2 points though.

Children should be a priority case.

If the pens work for you, they are better than the pump.

If the pens down't work for you, it gives a degree of flexibility the pens can't offer. Ihave an erratic lifestyle, ie one day sat in my office, on myb side, not moving much, the next I am on teh raod, the next looking after mt children. I am also very senstive to insulin, which means it does not take much to me high or low...so the fact that I can alter my basal rate at the tough of a button is great, where as the lanyis/levimir, would run out..and of course, when you have injected it...ther eis little you can do to counteract it, except eat..even if you do reduce your bolus amounts.

I do agree, that the pump isn't for everyone, not everyone needs it, and if the pens work for you, then I agree, there is no need to change.

hiya me and my son are currently fighting for a pump he is 8 and has been diabetic since the age of 4 and we have never had a hba1c lower than 10 the dsn and consultant have agreed he needs one and have written to apply for funding and we have everything crossed for a positive outcome soon. i agree if u have a solution that works for u u would be silly to change its alot of money to fund for a pump and i agree the money would be better spent on people who are really struggling to get control first ,having said that it should be people who dont have good control but not for the lack of trying my dsn said to me just the other day they had someone demanding a pump but they had not worked to make the injections work for them, then we show up having done at least 4 blood tests a day sometimes closer to 10 with all our diary filled in and have not had good results to show for all that work. some people would purposely make the injections not work to be able to get the pump as they feel its less work but from what i have read they are still hard work which i dont mind but would be great to get the results to go with that work. its nice to hear someone who doesnt think they deserve the funding for a pump when they have a good regime that suits them :D :D
