Just to sum up: Some of you will know that everything went well for me till last Sunday. Eating very few carbs, less than 20g a day I'm sure, had successfully lowered my estimated A1C to 5.1% over the last 3 months. Then suddenly on Sunday my BGs went up quite a bit, and the A1C for the last 3 days shows a whopping 6.0% - and I haven't changed my way of eating.
Today my FBG was 5.7, ok fine, but 4 hours later it was 8.7, and I'd only had 2 slices of cheese and some glasses of water. 4 year old briped rebelled. If this is how it's gonna be, then I might as well have me some carbs!I had two slices of rye bread, and sure enough, 1½ - 2 hours later my BS was 10.1. Who cares, briped shouted at her diabetic body, and pigged herself, albeit a little more low carbyish. I had a pork patty, about 75 g, I think, and made myself a Low Carb microwave mug cake with a small splashing of whisky ( perhaps 3-4 teaspoonfulls, go for it!!) with whipped cream. I felt I went completely overboard, but perhaps I hadn't really been stuffing myself that badly, looking back on it.
Now, here's the weird thing. 4 hours 20 minutes after the 10.1 reading it was suddenly 5.1.To me checking my blood has become quite a bit of a thriller. Wonder if that tiny bit of whiskey did it?
Also, sorry for boring you with these BG posts. I promise I'll stop them once a/ they're back to normal or b/ I accept that I'll never understand how BG works.
I can’t answer your question but the cake with cream & whisky sounds fantastic- what’s the recipe?
Well the frist glass ofsugarfree alcohol is able lower blood glucose a bit, most say around 1 mmol , but well I also sometimes experience that after a High carb Day I have much lower morning blood glucose , but I am sure this Will not continue if I keep eating High carbs.
The last few days I have been eating much fewer carbs , but my morning numbers are higher than normal , my guess is that my liver flips out trying to produce more blood glucose when I dont eat as much as usual....
And by the Way I also become more moody on lower carbs ... all in all I do believe that if I could manage to get into a stable ketosis the numbers would get much lower and less fluctuating ... but til now I havent managed a steady ketosis diet .. both lack of fantasy and stricktness 20 grams of carbs in a Day is incredibly few carbs after all
Thanks for encouraging me, GuzzlerIt can, indeed, be very frustrating at times. When we can't find a reason for raised bg levels this can make us think 'Oh Why Bother!' but it is exactly because we are bothering that it is so frustrating.
Draw a line under this miniscule wobble and start afresh in the morning. You are doing well, keep it up.
The cause of disillusionment is it takes time for everything to settle into lower bgs status, longterm.
I don't know if I was ever in ketosis, but I don't think so. Weight loss would've been the inevitable outcome,
I thought weight loss was the point of ketosis, along with better BG control ...? What are the advantages for you then? Lower BGs?In fact my weight changes are a proper roller coaster.
That isn't necessarily true. My body is in ketosis, I use ketostix, but no weight loss. In fact my weight changes are a proper roller coaster.

You must have discovered perpetual motion
Well, for me this morning it's back to 5.9, and late last night it rose to 6.6 without having eaten anything since the fabulous 5.1. The two slices of rye bread were my first transgression in 3 months, but I guess I'd hoped that somehow they'd shock my system back to how it was before last Sunday.
Are you eating fewer carbs than usual because your FBGs are higher than you're used to, or the other way around?
I find it hard and restrictive too, but food has become a necessity minus the pleasure to me. I did weigh and count every morsel that passed my lips for 4 days, just to get an idea, so I know you have nearly no veggies to play with. I don't know if I was ever in ketosis, but I don't think so. Weight loss would've been the inevitable outcome, and I'm not really impressed with mine. I'm moody now, al right, but I wasn't when my BGs were well behaved. I'm losing my faith in LC for me, well we do say that everyone's different.
or b/ I accept that I'll never understand how BG works.
Ketosis does not guarantee weight loss. Weight loss alone does not guarantee better BG. I've lost 1/3 of my body weight at it's worst. Hasn't made an iota of difference to my BG, but low carb has of course.
I eat a lot less than my BMR calculated using the Harris Benedict formula. But do I eat less than my body needs, obviously not or I'd lose more weight. As I'm eating like a sparrow anyway, I'm not cutting any more from my diet. The problem is "how much does my body need", the Harris Benedict formula is way out and unreliable for me.
Interesting article identifying 10 reasons why you don't lose weight in Ketosis.

I'm guilty of not eating enough, experiencing stress leading to higher levels of cortisol (proved by blood test) and poor sleep.
I am just eating fewer carbs because I would like to be in the 5 mmols in the mornings again like I used to be the time I took metformin..
well no--Does it work for you?
