They dont know if im t1 or t2

Hi tealeaves, if keytones were present in your urine it would tend to indicate T1 unless you have been on a very low carb diet and have ketones due to that. Keytones with high bg levels can be very dangerous hence your nurses instructions to keep testing and go straight to A&E if your levels go above 12 mmol/L.

An anti body test (cant remember the name of it now) would show one way or the other if you are T1 or T2 but doctors are often loathe to give them for some reason relying instead on whether you are young or old thin or fat :roll:

Your levels dont appear to be too high at present so a few days wait will not harm you providing you keep an eye on your bg levels and keytones. Try to stay calm and not too stressed, easy to say I know but stress can increase bg levels so do try to stay chilled until you have further tests

It is common I understand for T1's have what is referred to as a honeymoon period were you actually produce some insulin thus keeping your bg levels down without the need for too much/any insulin, again this may be why your levels arent higher. Perhaps someone with more T1 knowledge than me can comment here :thumbup:

Its not uncommon to get different test results when taken together for a variety of reasons like the 10% tolerance on your meter so a genuine 6.4 could be -+ 10% ie 5.7 or 7.0 nothing to worry about

Honeymoon period is when the pancreas is able to recover after insulin therapy is started; patients having to stop insulin therapy as a result are not unheard of.

Do you know P[type 1 given positive GAD antibody test]?

It's about 0.6 assuming sensitivity of 0.6 and specificity of 0.95 (not all type 1 patients test positive, and most diabetics are type 2) so this test would only be marginally better than tossing a fair coin.

Hope I can give you some re-assurance here.

I was recently diagnosed T1- my readings have been ranging between 13 - 20 for about 5 weeks now (sometimes 8 -9 if I've not eaten for a while) and I only tend to get to trace ketones only. I've got an appointment on 12th Dec for insulin treatment and I have to monitor for ketones increasing and if I feel unwell to report it. So far, my limbs are just achy, and I'm very tired and have blurry eyes.

So for you, a couple of days wait will not do any damage you have a meter there so keep testing - BUT if you suddenly feel unwell you need to get to emergency.

Diabetes can manifest in weird and wonderful ways and there's different types - no one has exact precise glucose, ketones, symptoms etc. Typically it is T1s that tend to get Ketones though, however on rare occasions so can T2...the Endocrine system is complex and even more so when it doesn't work properly :crazy:

Good luck, hope you get the relevant tests done too as mentioned by AMBrennan, which are c-peptide and anti-GAD that are used to see if you have adult onset of T1.

This may help, I was dignosed type two 18 months ago, managed well on just diet, then a year ago i had a slight raise in my Hba1 test and they put me on metformin........ all went well ( apart from the usual tummy upset that starting on met can do

Then all of a sudden last week my blood readings went up the wall to 18, 25 fasting 12 and 14
with sore eyes, terrible thirst ect.

Rang my surgery who put me on glicazide and then when things didnt settle down and still high readings they put the glicazide up to a tablet 80mg morning and night

no better and then I had trace keytones My surgery told me to go to A and E if readings went higher

Upshot is they dont know whether I am late type 1 or classic type two....... I have an appt at clinic tom to decide what to do next.... Ive tried straving for a day.... No carbs sunday ..... still in the high teens... feel so tired and awful with such a high blood sugar.... think you have to keep in contact with your DSN and tell her all your worries

So feel for you, its horrid, but this forum has taught me more in a week than I ever could have hoped for ...... and several laughs too

Feeling very hungry is a typical sign of poorly controlled diabetes. Bringing it under control decreases the hunger.

The tests for whether you are T1 or T2 often take much longer than the simpler tests for whether you have diabetes at all. One of the cheaper tests for this is to give you the pills for T2 and check if they help at all. If you're T1 with no insulin resistance, expect those pills to make no difference except for the possible side effects.
