Thick head

I'm new to this game ! I've been diagnosed as type 1 in feb, and trying tablets first but they're making no difference.
I'm still trying to work out what it all means ! I quite often get thick heads, can't wake up properly and it can last for a couple of days. The question is, could this be because of the diabetes ?
My sugars were around 17 when diagnosed, I've now changed eating habits and they're around 12 during the day.
Quite strange though because I can get quite hot and shaky quite often and I've checked levels and they're about 5-6 Normal !
Sorry to moan on, I'm just trying to understand.
Any help much appreciated.

5-6 may be normal for those with good control but if you are running at 12 normally, 5-6 would be quite low and give you the same symptoms as a hypo. Id guess you'd be needing to eat something! Normal levels for me are between 4.5-8.

First off, surely you can't be type 1 if your doctor has only prescribed tablets? You need insulin if you're type 1!

Paul is right - 5 or 6 can easily feel hypoglycemic if you're running at levels as high as 12 during the day. If you can get your blood sugars down to more normal levels, then the level at which you feel shaky will drop too, and 5's and 6's will feel normal, as it should.

I think you should try to lower your blood sugar level before much longer. Levels as high as 12 will do you permanent damage if left untreated. You said you had changed your eating habits. What did you eat before, and what are you eating now?

Thanks for the replies. First tablets were Metformin and now Gliclazide 60mg twice a day. I suffered huge pains for two weeks with Metformin so came off them. Consultant says type 1 and heading toward insulin. I'm 6ft and 11 stone with no genetic links I know of and apparently an unusual case !! that made me feed good !.
I've always had a sensible diet and use my Mountain bike 2-3 times a week, I don't know how to lower my levels any further without eating dust all day !
Another thing - I can't eat bananas or Brazil nuts anymore because of the stomach pains I get. any ideas ?.

Hey wishywashy, sorry to tell you but you're exactly like me. I was diagnosed four years ago at age thirty; 6'2", 11 stone, triathlete, no links to diabetes in the family ever. So...they stuck me on metformin and, amazingly, absolutely nothing happened. After a couple of weeks I was put on an insulin mix, novomix if memory serves, and it brought my levels down to about 8-10 and then, finally, two months after diagnosis I was on novorapid and levemir and have been ever since with my readings 5-7 pretty much all the time. I can exercise for 3hrs without falling sleep afterwards and, though I'm far from happy to have this stupid disease, complication, illness..., I'm fine and my life's good. You need insulin and that's the only way you'll get your sugars down. Pester your doctor I guess, I'm sorry not to give you better advice but it'll work out.

you are feeling a hypo even at 5-6 but thats why we test our bloods, you will need to work out what you were eating before hand, exersize and keep an eye on it as it could be falling and go 6,5,4,3... dead!

i am often in the highs so i too get the hypo symptoms at 5 best thing to do is close your eyes sit down (not in that order) and rest for a second... then get up and get on with it...*if you do start to feel worse check again and see if you have dropped some... when you get on inslin (cause you will) there will be times when you will drop like a sack of spuds...

this type1 and type2 is crock anyway, its a vauge classifacation as there is a type3 for all the ones that arnt adsacly type1 or 2 and most of us fall into this type3 but they will put us into type1 or 2 for generalisation of severity!!

your screwed your in type1 with me that means were up the famous creek with no paddle or raft!!

good luck with it all,

Thanks, I really appreciate the comments and I know its a cliche but I don't feel like its just me!
So if I'm hypo do I just rest and get on with it ? shouldn't I eat, drink, land the plane, shout ?
Do I eat little and often, can I have a fry up at breakfast and a bag of crisps for dinner ? or is it all trial and error ?.how long for a meal to convert to sugar ? so many questions - sorry.
please don't tell me i need to eat pulses all day.

Bobro,

There is a very clear and distinct difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1's, like me, suffer a complete failure of insulin production and must inject insulin. Type 2's initially produce too much insulin, become insulin resistant and only require injected insulin if this hormonal imbalance is not addressed.

It's absolutely not inevitable that type 2's will eventually need insulin therapy. If they can reduce the demand for insulin, even the insulin resistance can be reversed.

I'm on insulin for the rest of my days, but if you're T2, there is hope!

Wishy, if you're going hypo, you need sugar - don't just sit down and rest! And yes, you can have a fry up for breakfast - in fact I'd thoroughly recommend it!

All the best,

i know there is differences between the type 1 and 2 but with in the type 1 there are differances and within the type 2 there are differences... wishy if you ARE HAVING a hypo you want to be eating sugar how much will be somthing you will have to work out for yourself, i personaly over do it alot and then go high... but if you are only 5-6 then you are not having a hypo, you can feel like you are having one if you are used to being high but you need to test, if you are more than 5 then i would just rest a sec till you stop shakeing, but you have to test your sugars!!!
