I am a type 1 diabetic and have been for the past 29 years. I was diagnosed at the age of three.
I have always had a brittle case of diabetes, even a simple cold used to hospitalise me with DKA, my current Diabetic consultant at the hospital, recommended me for a Full Organ Pancreas Transplant to try to slow down further complications, in the future.
In 2010 I was assed by the Transplant Team and was deemed suitable for the Full Organ Procedure. I was on the waiting lists for 9 Months , in which time I had two failed attempts where I did not make the theatre table. Then in Jan 2011 I got the phonecall, that I was getting the operation, depending on quality of the donor organ. I made my way to the hospital, heart in mouth.

I went down to theatre not sure wether the op was going to be done, When I came to I was in great discomfort, but I had had the operation done, £ days later I was back in theatre having part of the organ removed as it was dying off. A further 7 days later I was rushed back to theatre to have the whole organ removed as it was leaking.

I have been fighting rigoursly to get back on the waiting list since the moment that I awoke after the third op. The transplant team Dr keeps trying to persuead me to have the Islet transplant instead.
My main question is..... IF I AM ADAMENT THAT I WANT THE FULL ORGAN TRANSPLANT, SHOULD I BE GIVEN THE SECOND CHANCE THAT I SO GREATLY DESIRE??

Hi rob2205

Wow how scarey i've been a type 1 for 28 years i got it when i was 13 years old and now i have no awareness of hypos and my hubby has had to become my carer, i don't know if i could have gone through what you went through it must have been hard
and abit disheartening when the pancreas fails. I've heard abit about the inslets but was'nt sure of the procedure none of my diabetic team or consultant mention it all they talk about is the insulin pump which i tried 2 years ago and it made me so ill cos it was'nt adminerstrating insulin quick enough my levels went through the roof over 46mmol, and i never recieved no aftercare so that has put me off of that completly even though the consultant keeps trying to get me onto another one promising i will get all the aftercare i need for as long as i need it. If you have the insulets can you reduce your insulin injections?
