Hi All,

I've just started low carbing and found the first week relatively ok & lost 3lbs (yipee!), however this week Im really struggling not to eat and think about carbs. When I think about it I'm not actually hungry, but I just cant stop myself from craving!

I'm type 1 and want to do this to get my levels under control. Any advice you have on how to get through these moments will be much appreiciated, as I don't want to fall at the first hurdle!

Thanks
Lou

Hi Lou,yes first few weeks can be difficult.I substituted sweet carbs with nuts, that way when \I felt the urge to nibble I ate some nuts to satisfy the 'nibble' urge without loading on the carbs. It is a craving BTW but once you get past that you find that you are no longer hungry and you can walk around a supermarket and instead of rows of chocolate all you see is 'carbs' and ignore them, you can do it!!!! :D

Thanks Sue, great idea. I've been chewing gum for the last hour and given myself jaw ache. Had'nt even thought of nut/seeds! Lou

Watch out for carbs though. The favourite 'diabetic' nut is macadamia, commonly called 'macanuts' on the forum, just to mention them gets three or four feet of drool on the forum which takes ages to clean up!(drat where's my mop and bucket!)these are low in carbs.Watch out for peanuts and cachews which are higher in carbs as they are not true nuts.(There are plenty of true nuts on this forum ,|I'm one of them)read the packaging before you buy.I mix them up in a container then I can 'pick' when I feel like it.

Hiya Lou!

Keep at it girl I promise that the cravings do go away after a few weeks. I'm also type one and been low-carbing for 6 months and it's just been such an eye-opener :D

I found that I'd get wee cravings in the evening but that having a nibble of something high fat helped to stop it. Try nuts as Sue advised, or I would eat some cheese or have a spoonful of cream (maybe with some sf jelly). Something with fat def. helped though.

Katie :)

Agree on the nuts, also olives.

I space my carbs out in small quantities through the day, with things like oatcakes with cheese or nut butter to slow them down.

Then when all else fails there's 85% chocolate

The cravings DO go away - when your body becomes accustomed to not having the carbs it no longer seems to crave them

Thanks for the suggestions, Im all stocked up with nuts and cheese! :D and certainly found today a little easier (dont want to jinx myself!!!)

I have found im getting headaches at about 4pm the last couple of days. did you also find this?? it could be there just a bug going around and im going to get it, but headaches are unusual for me and it seems too much like a co-incidence. However saying that, Im also studying for exams so could be the stress and all the reading !!

Sorry another question! Im just off to a spinning class and have checked my levels there 6.2 (which is such an improvement).
I was doing the class before xmas but my levels were always above 10, so didnt worry about hypos, and if i checked my levels after they would come down to around between 6-8.

But now my levels are what they would have been after the class! So Ive eaten a meduim sized banana and Im taking dextrose with me just in case. Do you think this is ok? Thank you

Hi Lou,

I go to spinning classes twice a week and I always take glucose tablets and my meter (to check my bs halfway through the class) in with me. My bs levels are usually around 5.5 before the class and I find that they will not change significantly (or may even rise a little when I work REALLY hard!) My class is always at 6m which is at least 4-5 hours after I have injected any insulin (and only a small amount of insulin at that due to low carb lunch) therefore my circulatong insulin levels are low and I find I don't require any extra glucose - as I said before, if anything my bs may rise a little afetr high intensity exercise.

However, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT and you must test, test, test to establish how exercise will affect you. Jeep your meter and glucose close to hand and you'll be alright :D

Katie
