Hi all,
I realise that tiredness goes with being diabetic but it's never been so extreme for me until now. i'm a single Dad to a 14 yr old son (adopted) and have coped quite well until recently. i get so tired after work that i cant face doing anything when i get home. My son often does his own dinner before i get home and i just cant be bothered to cook so end up with a bowl of cornflakes. Then i rush to get my shower and just flop onto the sofa. Half of it could be boredom as my son spends most of his time in his room but i sometimes get so tired i'm in bed by 8 o clock! This would have been unheard of in the past but i just cant find the energy anymore. Does anyone else get like this?
 
Hello. Sounds pretty normal to me; in fact I'd say you're coping very well considering. However, if you tell us a bit more about your routine and exactly what you eat I'm sure we can work out a new routine that will have you on the upside quite quickly.
Your son will probably still spend most of the time in his room because that's what they do. :)

I also have chronic kidney disease which doesn't help. I take Amlodopine, Allopurinal, statins and Insulin twice a day. i'm 50yrs old and am up at 5.30am every day to work and although its not too physical i feel costantly drained. I used to go for long walks and regularly used the gym at work but now cant face either!

Have you been tested for anaemia?

This article explains about tiredness if your kidneys are not functioning properly.

Symptom 3: Fatigue
Healthy kidneys make a hormone called erythropoietin (a-rith'-ro-po'-uh-tin), or EPO, that tells your body to make oxygen-carrying red blood cells. As the kidneys fail, they make less EPO. With fewer red blood cells to carry oxygen, your muscles and brain tire very quickly. This is anemia, and it can be treated.

What patients said:

"I was constantly exhausted and didn't have any pep or anything."

"I would sleep a lot. I'd come home from work and get right in that bed."

"It's just like when you're extremely tired all the time. Fatigued, and you're just drained, even if you didn't do anything, just totally drained."

That is exactly me to a tee! I'll have to ask my doctor if he can test me for this. I see my Kidney specialist every 2/3 months and he's never mentioned this to me but i suppose it could have just happened! Thanks for your input, any help appreciated.
 
What's your BG like normally, and what's your HbA1c?
 
My BG normally quite good though sometimes evenings got a little high at times. Dont know my HbA1c, would it be down to my doctor to tell me?
 
Hi sjhume, sounds like you're doing a great job and looking after a teenage boy is certainly not an easy task (have one of my own!). Without causing any offence as its certainly not meant, have you done any of the online NHS questionnaires about low mood, anxiety or depression. Just a thought and one that is often pushed aside. Even mild low mood/depression can cause much lethargy.

It could be worth considering these causes of tiredness:
  1. Underactive Thyroid
  2. High blood sugars
  3. Iron deficiency anaemia
  4. Vitamin D deficiency
  5. Vitamin B12 deficiency
  6. Depression
  7. Stress
  8. Sleep Apnea
  9. Not getting enough sleep or good quality sleep

Denise i agree it could be any of these things with me though i am due a B12 injection so i'm thinking thats the main reason!
 
Have you had your magnesium levels tested I have much more energy now that I have increased my magnesium

Carol, no i haven't had my Magnesium levels checked. Didn't realise there was so much that could make me feel this way! I have just started taking Iron suppliment and hope this makes a difference. Thanks for your advice
