I have now been taking tirzepatide 5.0mg for 15weeks and have lost 12kg. The effects have been generally positive, as I've mentioned, such as reducing the swelling and inflammation of my left calf, which were the result of DVTs (Deep Vein Thromboses).
One curious side-effect that has been making itself felt more in recent weeks, as we move through Autumn, has been feeling the cold more.
This has been most evident in the change in disputes over heating with my wife. I've usually been very resilient against cold, wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts most of the year, apart from the depths of Winter. Usually my wife has wanted the heating on much higher than I have (and in Summer, the air-conditioning much lower, when we had air-conditioning, living in Cape Town).
This has changed radically. When, in the cooler months, the thermometer in the house reads 21-22°C, I have previously felt it too hot. I am now feeling cold. I've taken to wearing bedsocks, and a thing described as "Oversized Blanket Hoodie" a " Wearable Throw" or a "Hooded Blanket" about the house, with the temperature at about 21.5°C, to keep warm.
Meanwhile, despite not feeling feverish, my wife has said I have been feeling much hotter, as if I'm radiating heat.
I'm wondering if this is a common symptom, and, if it is, how long it lasts. I have looked for studies about this on pubmed.org, but can't find anything. The closest is a study showing an increase in Brown Adipose Tissue (sometimes called BAT) that may affect thermoregulation.
Looking it up, so far, I've seen suggestions that possible mechanisms might be:
- Altered brown fat distribution or function (as in the study I mention above)
- Peripheral vasoconstriction
- Reduced food thermogenesis (unlikely – as I say, my body seems hotter than usual)
- Reduced muscle activity (meaning less fidgeting – this is possible, but I've been exercising more than before)
- Reduction in Blood Pressure (157/91 -> 88/65 so this is quite likely)
- The reduction of body fat
- The slowing of metabolism
- Thyroid function changes
It may well be that a number of these factors are at work.
Have you experienced this? How long has it lasted? Is there a sign that it is short-term?
