Today i tried 2 shredded wheat 1 weetabix blueberrys with a coffee all with semi skimmed milk.
5.4 before 8.9 1 hour after 5.4 2 hours after. so there was a spike after a hour. Obviously after looking at the carb content then the weetabix biscuit shouldnt be added but im a greedy git lol. Is this spike something to worry about or shall i drop the portion size to down the spike. Im off work this week so im testing the foods i take on the rd with me with some worrying results. I cant believe my hba1c has dropped atall and my weight with some of the portions ive been taking with me. no wonder i keep needing a wee. i thought until last week when i made the carb connnection that weetabix shredded wheat porridge etc was ok because low in sugar. Also if i actually do have the portions that are quoted on the box blood sugars seem tolerable. You must all think im a greedy git but dont forget when i started this regime in feb i was 21 stone and today 14 11 . I am so shocked when i look back and see what ive eaten and the portion sizes then count the carbs. funny thing is i think diabetes saved my life

as diabetics we are all different and need to try things and see what works for us,
as for the spike that is entirely your choice, personally i wouldnt be overly bothered as they go back down rather quickly but there are some on the forum who would be bothered, yet again it is all about personal choice and finding what works for you :D

Not too sure what to say about the cereal - I used to find it hard to eat a small portion, so I stopped altogether.

Great work on the weight loss and the BG control, though. What's your secret???

hi patch,
no secret just stopped everything and made sure everyday no matter what even if raining i walked for a hour and a half. i brought a digital peodometer form amazon that measures calorie burn distance time and steps. 1 and a half hours walk =550 calories =10,000 steps and roughly 6.5 kms. Im very strict as in no chocolate pastries nothing and gave up alcahol completley although will be having a tipple at xmas. Im very strict because as a hgv driver if i get to the insulin stage my license is taken and this doesnt pay the bills feed my kids or let me live the lifestyle im used too. ive gone from a saturday night of 8 cans of stella and a pizza to poultry veg and water lol. Im a bit weiry of trying alcahol again though. Iwas looking at carbs in drinks. Am i right in thinking spirits are better ,obvioulsy measured but for overall blood sugars?

From the Atkins Diet Revolution, White Spirits are fine (Vodka, Gin, Barcardi, etc...) carbohydrate wise. Careful with the mixers, though. AND careful with the Gin! Tehy don't call it mothers ruin for nothing!

You've done brilliantly well so far! And you're making a big sacrifice to keep your job and therefore cash coming in. I guess it's called motivation! Some of us aren't in that dire position, so all strength to your arm. If you decide to avoid the 8+ spike, you could take out the one weetabix and put in an egg (cold if travelling, hot if at home?) as it would probably fill you better and slow down uptake of the other starch (I think, from what I read here!). Someone will correct me if wrong. I used to lurve shredded wheat and weetabix but they get me up to 12 so deffo not on now.

i feel like a policeman here this weel lol quick question. If i test myself after 1 hour and its in range do s till have to test after 2 hours. Trying to save testing strips. I just had fish with tinned tomatoes garlic and chilli salad and 30 grams of chilli pasta(from asda only 30g of carb per 100)and after 1 hour the reading was 6.9 so this has made my day and i have a big smile now.Or because its slow releasing do i need to check again in a hour. Is this the same for all testing because im gonna need some more strips soon and we all no how that feels trying to get blood out of a stone at the clinic lol

Because it is slow releasing you need to test at two hour and possibly three hours. It is the only way to find out for sure how things affect your blood.
I'm afraid the initial testing is heavy on test strips, I bought my own to start with and kept a food diary for two weeks till I could see the pattern in what I was eating. I only get 50 a month and often buy so I can test more often. The joys of being a type 2 on diet only! :D

hi sue if its is lower on the second one to the first one do i asume a third one is not needed.phew run out of fingers trying to count that

Unfortunately no, because of the slower nature of digestion it may well go up again by three hours.

Never assume when testing. Once you have tested intensively for two weeks you will get the hang of which foods take longer to raise blood sugars. These are usually the starchy carbs and also meals that are heavy on fat because the fat delays the digestion and absorption.
