I do believe we all hate those social gatherings, especially when you know only one of two, especially the host because after acknowledging your presence your are left to your own companh, even if your partner is with you.
The best ones are either close family of it a works do is done properly with inclusion and a free bar!
Our Christmas parties were brilliant because the partners of my colleagues did the planning and collected the cash.
This solved many issues including we had a plus one policy for spouses.
