Toe nail fungus

Sorry, not a nice subject I know but I'm a bit concerned about having a toe nail fungal infection. Saw a nurse at the surgery today who tells me I have to wait for the nail to grow and take some clippings for analysis before they can treat my supposed fungal infection.
It doesn't hurt and at the moment the white appearing on my nail starts from the bottom of it and is going up the sides, which obviously means that any clippings I take right now won't have the white infected bit on.
My readings have been sky high this weekend. In the 17's (that is VERY high for me as I'm usually well-controlled) and I had a bit of a funny turn this morning. Not a hypo just a really weird out-of-body feeling. Difficult to describe but I guess I'm sickening for something with readings like that.
Anyway, what worries me is that having looked up toe nail fungus combined with diabetes, on the net, many sites say if not caught early enough, my problems could lead to amputation. As I never relished the idea of acquiring a parrot, I'd like to avoid this at all costs, SO.......what can I do if my surgery insist I've to wait for the nail to grow? Is it safe for me to let things progress like the surgery want them to?
Any advice much appreciated.

There are some excellent anti fungal meds, both oral (Grisefulvin) and topical. It's up to your doc to prescribe them.

I had the same problem for several years, I finally cured it by painting the nail twice a day with Tea Tree Oil.

It still has to grow out so it takes about 4 months depending on how fast your nails grow.

I too suffered with this for many months. Finally managed to get rid using prescribed tablets and tipping Tea Tree Oil directly onto the fungus.

Thank you both so much for your replies. I like the sound of using Tea Tree Oil, as that sounds natural and I don't like using manufactured medication unnecessarily. Many thanks.
