You might not have the luxury of waiting overlong. Infections can run rampant and they are very painful. A root canal is no guarantee you won't loose it eventually anyway. (Three inflamed roots, 9 sessions at the dentist, and in the end I needed an extraction, then that got infected because a chip from my jaw bone'd irritated things... It got ugly. So even with root canal treatment I lost the molar and still had infections, five rounds of antibiotics as well... And that was with decent, non-diabetic blood sugars). Either way you'll need time to heal, and antibiotics may be a good idea whatever way you go.
All in all... Whatever you do, don't let it get out of hand. If you think you can get decent blood sugar control, more power to you. But don't put it off into infinity, whatever your choice'll be. And if at any point you get a fistula, (a little white pimple, if it's not burst yet), get yourself to a dentist quickly and get looked after.
Good luck,
Jo
