Husband got phone call yesterday to say come down and see us, your bloods came back high and you're now diabetic. He's 63, has heart disease, and needs to lose some weight as well. I just don't know what to feed him on ! Been reading about low carb/low sugar/low fat and I'm lost.
What main foods can he have and not have, in order to lose weight and control this diabetes ? (type 2)

Me again Ming
To control diabetes and reduce weight, a good way is to reduce the carbs in the diet, that is, Cut sugar out and reduce anything with starch as low as you feel comfortable.
Get the "Collins Little Gem" calorie counter. It's inexpensive, small and contains more than 350 pages with information on about a dozen foods on each. The introductory chapter is quite helpful too.
If you search through the forum, you'll find a number of ways of dealing with carbs. Many of us like to reduce our carb intake to below 100g per day, but another successful approach is to exchange High GI foods for Low GI.
You and your husband need to discuss this and work out which would suit you. Then once you have tried an approach, you might change according to how well it works.
If you are not sure what a carb is, read the "stickies"

It was the receptionist who told him, and she said he needed to come and see the nurse & doc - then she gave him an appt 3 weeks away  So I phoned them right back and changed it to thurs. Hopefully we will get things explained then, but he isnt happy at all and stressing to hell. Just have to get on with it eh - ty all !
Have been reading a bit and sorting out my shopping list now.
