Toujeo problems

Hi everyone, I was switched from Tresiba to Toujeo a couple of weeks ago as Tresiba supplies are apparently very erratic now. I’ve always done well with Tresiba, taking it around 10pm with morning readings around 6 mmol. Since starting Toujeo though, my morning readings are between 15 - 19! I discussed this with my diabetes nurse yesterday and she was surprised and said there shouldn’t be any appreciable difference between the two insulins. Nothing else has changed, still taking the same dose, at the same time etc. it’s like the Toujeo just isn’t working at all. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced anything similar?

Hi @DdraigMafon and welcome to the forums

Not my understanding. Tresiba is a very long acting (42 hours) insulin while toujeo lasts 24 hours and is (as I understand it) a concentrated form of lantus/glargine.

I'm a long term lantus user and find that it doesn't always (for me) work the full 24 hours. Some people take it at night so that it isn't running out when the dawn phenomena hits, while I have taken to splitting it to even out its action. (Disclaimer, I'm not a lantus fan but it is the only basal available in New Zealand).
as Tresiba supplies are apparently very erratic now.
Is this disposable tresiba pens or the reusable pens with cartridges? My understanding was that supply issues were for the disposable pens only.
However, it seems from the above link that there is an issue with the 200 units/ml tresiba? Is that what you are taking?

Yikes, thanks for the heads up. I use the U200 and just called my pharmacy to ask what happens if there is a shortage when I next need it. I wouldn't mind using U100 for a while in a non disposable pen but I would mind switching to a completely different insulin.

I have read that it can take up to 4hrs to work. I googled trying to find the article l came across a site that said up 6hrs in which case 10 to 6 leaves 2 hrs to work. If I was you I would ring customers services to find out exactly how long it should take.

In the meantime if you are not doing it all ready is double test and test when you take your insulin make sure your levels are in target
