Hi all,

I have been t1 diabetic for almost 20yrs now so am a bit of a veteran. For awhile i have been suffering night time hypos and waking up in the high teens whilst using lantus.
At a review i was offered a chance to try toujeo which i was told was longer acting (the full 24 hrs) and might help. I have been using this for a week. Woke up on the last 3 mornings in the mid 20's. I have had a cold but my daytime results have been fine after correction.
I am wondering if i might get "dawn phenomena" (i think that is the term)?
The doctor told me that he was unaware of what the general consensus was re the best time to inject etc. I have been injecting in the morning so maybe night would be best?
Has anyone been using toujeo longer? What are your experiences? I have ramped up my dose from 30 units to 40 to see if my control improves.

Many thanks!

Hello,

I can't comment on the insulin you are using, but I have had a similar problem with Levemir before. I was taking my full dosage (to last the 24hrs) before bed and finding I was suffering hypos around 4-5hrs later. These hypos were followed by a subsequent 'rebound high' in the morning.

I also found the Levemir didn't quite cover the full 24hr period even though it claims to.

To combat both the above issues; I split my dosage in half, injecting 12hrs apart. i.e. 10pm and 10am. This stopped the night hypos and also the rebound highs.

This worked for myself using Levemir but I wouldn't try this without first consulting your Dr. I also noticed that when I split my dosage I actually used less insulin. 40 units down to 36.

Hopefully someone else can add their experience.

Regards,
Grant
