I'm currently training for a 10k race for life in July. Does anyone have any tips on maintaining blood sugars before during and after running? Best things to eat/drink, how to adjust insulin etc.
General tips would also be greatly appreciated as I am NOT a runner, can just about manage to run a bath...
Hey!
I've recently done my first 10k from being a complete couch potato before so good on you for getting out there!
I always run first thing in the morning before breakfast - so i check before i go, correct if necessary and eat a banana (but any long term carbs would work)
Afterwards I test again - but i tend to leave it if it's just a bit high then shower or whatever for a bit. Check after an hour and only then correct because i found if i corrected too soon i was going low later.
It may just be that you need a little trial and error! I recommend checking out 'Diathlete' on facebook - his posts are really motivating and very useful for runners (plus he's a lot more experienced than me so will probably be more helpful!)
Hope thats helped - Good Luck!
On the way to 10km, parkrun 5km are free runs at many locations on Saturday mornings, 9am in England & Wales - see http://www.parkrun.org.uk/events/events/ to find runs convenient to where you live / work ./ study. Register online, print out 6 bar codes, cover them in plastic or laminate, leave one in each bag of running shoes / car / bike etc, ready for any Saturday morning. I've just done my 51st parkrun, spear around 8 locations, and will continue to parkrun whenever I'm not working on a Saturday morning.
Well done for signing up for a 10K @LoisCoxx !
Hope all is going well with your training. Great advice above from @copepod and @hereforlife - you might like to join the Sporty Diabetic Type 1's FB and the TeamBG FB group through the Team blood glucose website too (if you haven't already).
These are the basics you should know though:
