Diet drinks - the artificial sweeteners taste vile.
Having to forswear foods I have loved all my life.
Trying to find low carb meals when eating out.
I've just completed the long, tortuous and painfully lengthy process of getting Travel Insurance quotes for an annual multi-trip policy for Europe for myself and my partner.
As a diabetic it was obvious I would have to go to a specialist insurer who was prepared to cover pre-existing conditions.

So I took what seemed a logical approach.

I contacted:
A specialist insurer recommended by Which?
A specialist insurer linked to from a well known health related charity
The insurer linked to from this web site.

I received two quotes, both quite expensive, but within £0.50 of each other.
One had slightly better terms so I went with that.
One quoted the extra charge for existing conditions as an extra - this was about £60 for the two of us.
The other just bundled everything in, but it seems reasonable to assume that the costings would be similar.

The third site (which did not have the best of web interfaces) refused me cover on the firtst pass, then sugggested an alternative underwriter and made me answer EXACTLY the same questions from start to end before refusing me cover for the second time.
It then suggested I might be eligible for a single trip policy, and would I like to fill in all the questions for a third time.
I declined.

Sadly, this was the insurer linked from this website.

As a couple, we are obviously not uninsurable.
We have just obtained two near identical quotes from reasonably high profile sources.
Last year we went on a 7 month round the world trip and were given health insurance after going through the health vetting process.

So, standing on my soapbox, I ask "WHY?".
Why is the insurer linked from this website, which is in turn dedicated to diabetics, unable to offer cover?
Is it because of other non-diabetic conditions?
But the vast majority of T2s have reached the age and state of health where there are likely to be other health issues.

So how many people here have been accepted for a quote?

To the team behind the website - I am more than happy to discuss privately the conditions declared if they wish to follow this up with their insurer of choice.

Cheers

My husband has been looking into travel insurance quotes for me. It will be horrendously expensive and it seems that I might not be able to get cover for the US at all. It's frustrating, because although I've had a stroke caused by undiagnosed diabetes, I am now fitter than I have been for over 20 years. So husband will get to run around all over the place on his trekking trips through the summer and autumn and I've shelved my plans and will try again once a year has passed since my stroke.

I always do mine through my Bank, it is one of the perks of my account. As long as you let them know about chronic conditions when you are diagnosed, it is very reasonable. I don't know how it would work if you took it out and had to mention pre-existing conditions though.
