I'm type 2 and have recently been put on insulin, Toujeo, once a day injection. I normally do my fasting blood test and then the insulin around 10am. It can be injected up to 3 hours either side of the usual time.
However, I'm going on holiday soon and will need to get up around 3.30am to get to airport for 5am. Help! The blood fasting test should be before any food or drink but I'll need a hot drink when I get up and whilst at the airport. Could do insulin at 7am or as late as 1pm. Either way if I'm up and about I'll at least need a drink before 7am and food at some point. How do others cope with these situations?

I think I would test after waking up, and then test again before taking the Toujeo at my usual time.

Hi Pat,

I think you maybe looking in to this too much.

I agree with Antje77,

You need to get up for your flight at a certain time, so when you wake up would be the best time to check your BG.

Have a drink and a snack if you feel like it. You can test before just so you have a record, but I would not feel the need to if I was in your shoes.

At 10 AM no matter where you are, stop and test your BG and then inject your usual dose.

Then concentrate about having a great vacation ahead and making your flight on time.

The diabetes management has to work around your life and schedule and not the other way around.

Good luck and have a great vacation.

Thanks.
