Travelling with diabetes

Hi all,

Apologies if this has previously been answered but couldn't find much information

I am 31 year old man who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in March earlier this year.

Due to this, as you will be aware, there is significant "extras" that I now have to carry at all times

I travel quite alot between UK and Europe and have been advised that I need to get a doctors note to carry pens/needles/sharps boxes etc each time I go through the airport. These are chargeable, which is fine but have to give 2 weeks notice at my Gp as only 1 person can do the letters

Have many people had issues with taking equipment through customs etc where a letter hasn't been had or is anyone aware of a more robust solution like a card or something similar that can purchase to make this process easier?

I got a standard travel letter from my DSN and there was no charge. As a Type one, I presume you attend a hospital diabetic clinic, so why not phone your DSN and ask for a letter to be sent out to you.?

They rarely ask for the letter but it's always better to have one.

I'm type 2 so maybe different but carrying my meter etc through security hasn't been an issue so far. I explain I'm diabetic, most security people seem fine about it.

Like @dancer I've always carried a Dr's letter but the likelihood is you won't get asked to produce it, but just the same it's worth getting one IMHO.
