Tresiba side effects with alcohol

Hi everyone I am T2 and find I can't drink red wine or any other alcohol when I am taking Tresiba. With red wine by blood sugar actually falls..so I can enjoy a glass or two of red wine but the next day and usually two days after I feel really unwell. It´s not a hangover so I am assuming it is the insulin reacting with the wine. Can any one help with this please.

I'm a type 1 what uses Tresiba and sat here after drinking rosa wine, slightly drunk at 2.7 but that is more likely because I miss calculated the carbs in the meal u have just eaten.

But @Antje77 is correct :)

I always thought the general guideline is no alcohol with diabetes medication, it being metformin etc. or insulin? I cheated once, last year, and had a small glass of mulled wine. My bs spiked to 14 mmol/l. Not worth it for me.

Safest bet would be...don't drink anything with alcohol in it. But maybe too easy for me to say, as I don't miss it at all.

Simha - I think the usual guidance is to be mindful when drinking, because alcohol can make bloods erratic. They usually drop, then depending on the type of alcohol - wine, beer, spirits, will likely rise a little (maybe back to where the person started, or higher if it was a sweeter wine or beer.

Personally, I don't drink much and can have periods of weeks or months when I just don't bother with alcohol. When I have a glass of wine or a G&T after that, I find my tolerance has fallen away a bit. Some folks also find if they lose weight their alcohol tolerance changes.

I appreciate that the Metformin information leaflet talks about no alcohol, but I have read of many members questioning this with their doctors, who have been content, provided it's in moderation.

You are probably right. I'm sure it also depends on your doctor or diabetic nurse. ;)

I quite merrily drink like a fish, but stick to dry white, red wine or spirits, nothing that spikes me or I have to dose insulin for. I’m a little prone to going lower then next day, so just reduce my basal for a bit :)
