I am hoping someone out there can give me some advice. I have been quite bad at the end of last year, eating loads of carbs and putting on weight, with high sugar levels. So at the beginning of January I have started a very low carb diet and going to gym. After only a week my sugar levels are almost back to normal and I am feeling a lot less bloated. However, I seem to have hit a horrid side effect. I cant sleep. I toss and turn for hours. It feels like I have had a couple of cups of coffee but I dont drink anything containing caffein. The only sleep I have had is when I finally break down and take a sleeping pill. Does anyone know why I should be having this problem and what I can do about it. As I said, I am already going to gym so exercise doesnt seem to help. What can I do? I am an eight hours sleep a night girl!

Thanks

My brother once went to see a doctor and complained that he was having trouble sleeping. This doctor said that if he was tired then he would sleep.

Your comment that you are an eight hour a night person might not be true any longer. Being in bed for eight hours does not mean that you will sleep eight hours. Try being a six hour a night person to see if you get tired.

I am so tired I can hardly keep my eyes open, until I get into bed, then my thoughts go round and round my head and I just cant seem to relax. I am missing the days my sugar was high, I would nod straight off! I am at my wits end.

No, I don't have any other helpful comments except that I notice you say that thoughts go round and round in your head. You sound as if you are wound up about something.

Hi, Antmos

There seems to be a trend merging with sleep problems, not to sure what the cause is. ( only happened to me in the last few weeks, now getting better).

I am now going to blame the weather as I have come up with a blank answer.

At least you are not alone.

Some say when you cant fall asleep, get up and make a relaxing hot caffeine free drink and listen to some music until you get tired, then back to bed.

Anyway best of luck.

Roy.

Thanks Izzzi,

I seem to have this problem every time I start eating healthily after being bad. My body seems to need time to get used to the good stuff I am putting into it :?

Hopefully it will sort itself out soon, otherwise I will be going through lots of books during the night?

I have no trouble going to sleep in the first place but I have been known to wake up in the night and then have trouble. On those occasions I sometimes get up and make a cup of tea and stay up for one hour. I go to sleep straight away when I return to bed.

Sounds like its stress or anxiety that's keeping you awake, try and deal with these thoughts before you retire to bed.

Even if bored or at a loose end...
The brain can over think on things - making even the most placid person
feel more anxious or even a bit stressed.

Try breathing in and out deeply slowly 'lying down' when you breathe do it from
the diaphragram[stomach] not from just the lungs and chest .
Breathe out via your mouth 'not' the nose .
This will slow ALL senses completely down.

Try doing this for 15minutes and you will feel the difference
Your brain will switch to feel the effects of the breathing thus stopping circular thinking!
Give it a whirl - let us know IF it helps too ...

Anna.

My husband once couldn't sleep so listed all of the places he liked to eat and fell asleep half way through reciting his favourite restaurants!
