Trouble with sugar levels

I am Type 2, diagnosed March 2008. I thought I had good control until the last couple of weeks and now can't explain the fluctuations in my blood sugar levels. I have always been around 5.5 in the mornings, last couple of mornings I have been 7. After meals I am around 7-8 mark, 2 hours after breakfast this morning I was 14.4, a hour later I was 9.9. The other day I went up to 13.5 2 hours after dinner, then three hours after that (without eating anything in between), sugar level went down to 3.8!! - a drop of nearly 10. I haven't changed what I eat, currently take 2 x 850 Metformin, generally feel unwell, really tired, started to wake during the night for the loo and beginning to get really thirsty. Saw my Doctor this morning who was concerned about the large flunctuation I had the other day, have to go for HbA1c test next week. Does your body get "used" to the Metformin, or does the diabetes get worse? Doctor says once we have blood results back, then might have to increase medication, but does that mean that medication will need to increase on a regular basis or is it just a case of trying to get the right dosage (although I thought we had found that as I have been well controlled over the last year)?

Welcome to the forum ,Mickey. Have you had any other health problems lately? Been unwell? Infections can up your blood sugars as can 'time of the month' etc.

I was about to post a very similar problem to Mickey - I have had great control for the last three weeks, but the last couple of days everything has gone haywire for no apparent reason, going from a mid-afternoon low of 4.2 to a post breakfast high of 12.1 .... what can cause this (my diet hasn't changed, and there are no other reasons I can see that are obvious)?

Had a severe case of traveller's tummy about a month ago - lasted for about three weeks, but am over that now. Don't have monthlies anymore as I had a hysterectomy two years ago (although ovaries were left). Doctor advised me to stop Metformin while I still had the diarrhea, so didn't take them for a week (but that was a month ago).

Any stress factors? ( you do not have to post details ,I am just looking for any other changes that can be factored into this).

No - don't feel stressed. Doctor said I should try to do some exercise (don't really do any at the moment), but it's not like I have been exercising and have stopped.

I initially lost a stone and a half when first put on Metformin, but have gradually put on half a stone over the last few months, which I can't seem to shift. By the way - Doctor has asked for full blood tests including Thyroid test just in case.

My personal thoughts ,Mickey ,are on your diet.Perhaps the portion sizes .Obviously though you will have to discuss with your doctor and see what the blood results are as there could be any number of other factors involved.I hope you get to the bottom of it.
What kind of diet do you follow?

I haven't changed anything I can think of. Before I was diagnosed I ate a low sugar, low fat diet anyway. For breakfast I normally have shredded wheat or two crumpets (have tested previously after eating these and there has not been a problem). For lunch I normally have a sandwich - chicken or cheese with salad. For dinner I will have something like fish or meat. Not a great lover of potatoes or pasta, so normally just have meat and veg. In the evening I'll have some fruit or nuts for snacks. I do allow myself a "treat" everyday - two rich tea biscuits with my mid morning cup of tea. I have a very boring diet really - tend to eat the same sort of things, food I feel "safe" with. What I can't understand is why levels have been going up, when my diet hasn't changed!

There could be other factors but you mentioned weight had gone up.this can change insulin resistance and therefore your body's ability to cope with carbohydrate. A suggestion would be to look at the amount of carbohydrate that you do eat and maybe think in terms of changing what you eat at one meal, say breakfast for instance and see if it makes any difference.
