Trust me I'm a Dr... Research....

I've always necked mine at 6am washed down with a strong cup of tea with a splash of milk. Perhaps there are further changes I need to make to my routine!

Will have to speak to gp I take all my tablets together in the morning and just had to up my thyroxine as it wasn't effective any more.

I am a participant in a current study by the University of Oxford, called ASCEND, A Study of Cardiovascular Events iN Diabetes, which involves taking a fish oil capsule and an aspirin, or placebos, and comparing long term the effects on heart disease. I know from the taste I get when the capsule ruptures that it contains fish oil but am not sure whether the pill contains aspirin or not as if I crunch it sometimes I think I can detect a bitter taste and sometimes not. It is nationwide and can be found by googling ascend diabetes.

I applied for the study, but I'm not eligible as they don't want people with Type 2.

No just a list of eligibility criteria including that. Another one was 'must be willing to eat fish'

I'm a type 2 and have been since about 2000. In the 5 years or so I have been doing the study there has never been a requirement to eat fish. In fact the only fish I generally eat is from the fish n chip shop. Maybe kippers and pilchards/sardines occasionally. I've not really been brought up as a fish eater but I do take the opportunity to sample fish dishes when on holiday abroad. The trial is scheduled to finish in 2017.

Just mentions capsules in the ASCEND article.

I take one capsule containing fish oil, I know it is because sometimes it bursts after swallowing and before I can eat, and one small white tablet which may or may not contain aspirin. Every six months I have a questionnaire to fill in about any medical conditions such as heart problems, strokes and so on which may have developed. In my case it's all in the negative. The GP is informed of the study and I presume reports back on any changes or if the patient dies and what the cause is.

If I get wind of any of the results I'll let you know. I did talk to the head of the local diabetes clinic at the hospital who is involved in the study and he did say that the results were interesting and not what they were expecting. Read into that what you will but next time I see him I'll try and find out a bit more.

Again no encouragement or otherwise at any time during the study to eat fish, oily or not. Nor has there been any indication of fish eaters as against those that are supplement fed. I can only say what I know or what my experience has been.
