I am newly diagnosed (less than a week) previously I was a 2 litre of coke +4 red-bulls a day girl!!! but on Tue (diagnosis day) I gave them up for good (dropped 6lbs already!!) !!! 6 months ago i went to a specialist for a different reason and the consultant told me then sugar was poisoning me and skip forward to now looks like he was right as i am now type 2 diabetic!
My problem now is what drinks are the best ones for me I have also given up tea and coffee completely as i just cant face drinking them without sugar and sweetener gives me a terrible taste in my mouth :( all sugar free drinks do this also so there out !! are juices any good?? u know the ones in the cartons ive tried fizzy water with the flavouring and its gross as is the old council pop arghhhh !! what to do ?? milk i can handle but is it advisable for diabetics ??

Any suggestions greatly appreciated ! ( and anyone who says drink diet coke try pepsi max !! DONT it all tastes like rubbish and gives me a funny tummy coz of the saccharin or what ever they put in it !!)

No need to give up on coffee & tea just because you can't take sugar, it may take some time getting use to but you will begin to appreciate the true flavour of the drink where before you just tasted the sweetness.

I like green tea and drink 2 mugs everyday, again it may taste strange at first but you will find it's a refreshing hot drink.

I'm struggling with this too as I don't like the taste of artificial sweetener and even though I could have a small amount of sugar, I don't want to. I don't like alcohol anyway, except for a Crabbies raspberry ginger beer, so yep, I'm struggling. Getting a bit fed up of sparkling water - or even worse a tap water if they don't have any sparkling water.

No need to go without some great tastes in drinks .
Try sparkling water its just carbonated water mix with Vimto Sugar Free .
Mixed with the carbonated water you wont notice any sweetners at all . ;)

Aldi do a sugar free red bull known as Diet Thunder it tastes more of aspartane
than anything else not like sweetners .
Aspartane being the main thing (if you actually like these ? its another way to the red bull effect)

Hot lemon toddy - hot water with few slices of lemon in - teeeny wheeeny drop of whisky in !
No sugar/honey/etc needed .
Soothes and warms chest a little , ideal if sore throat to sip too .

Carton fruit juices steer clear off as these can be laden with sugars/sweetners .

Fruit juices are full of sugar, so need to be avoided if possible. Fruit is full of sugar, and although it is natural sugar, it is still sugar. Milk is not advisable for diabetics except in small quantities in tea and coffee. Personally I drink tea, and also a lot of water - tap water put in bottles and kept in the fridge. If I'm out somewhere I will have a still mineral water with a slice of lemon. It's amazing what you get used to after a short time.

With respect to sweeteners, different types have a different taste. I hadn't realised this until a friend told me. I then tried all of the top selling ones and ended up with the one that gave the best flavour for me.

Having gone cold turkey on coke and the like for water I have lost the addiction I once had for sweet drinks.

I expect anyone who has drunk a lot of sugary drinks has acclimatized to sugar (and maybe even been addicted) so all the alternatives taste bad.

So as diabetics we can either go without altogether or retrain ourselves maybe with small doses until we get used to it.

Strong flavors can mask the "taste of sugar or alternatives" the strongest of those mentioned is Pepsi Max. Try 1/2 and 1/2 I am sure you will still detect it but the object is to get used to the new taste.not to find out how good you are at detecting fake sugar.

The real problem we have is being addicted to the "fake" taste of cola drinks Cola is not even a natural flavor (unless there is something out there that I do not know about)

So my suggestion is swallow your indignation and work on developing an acceptance of a new taste. I know wine drinkers start sweet and their preference gets drier (less sweet).so our tastes can change with familiarity and time.

I'm in the same position - I've never been a fan of tea or coffee so drank a couple of cans of coke most days (and the full fat proper stuff - not the overly fizzy and full of E numbers diet versions which gave me a dodgy tummy too!!), however it's worse here in Canada because it has more carbs / sugar (plus 20 more calories!!) than either the US or UK versions. It's same with a lot of the stuff - I've just read the carbs on the wholemeal five grain bread and had to pick myself off the floor. No wonder I'm unhealthy!!!!!

I'm currently I'm surviving on water but I need to find an alternative before I go mad with boredom ;)

p.s. apologies for the rant - it's just so frustrating that everything here comes with a side order of sugar!!!

Hi @milly_moo!

I don't know if you like fizzy drinks but try San pellegrino or something similar. That's my go-to the San pellegrino. :) it's zero calories and tastes great with salads.

I haven't tried choc drinks yet using artificial sugars I hope someone who does can post here too, good luck!:)

Thanks for the suggestion. I always used to drink Tesco sparkling water, then just transitioned to the flat stuff for some reason I can't remember - I think it was just easier as OH preferred it. I'll have to take a look in the local supermarket but last time I looked the selection here wasn't great - there were a few weird flavoured waters but nothing like Perrier or SP - maybe a speciality store??

If not the local supermarket, then maybe try the local deli they might have them...They're good as they are small bottles, the perfect size, so they're handy and pop them in the fridge or if you're on the go. I've been drinking them often and they taste good paired with my usual meals such as broccoli and salmon--plus they fill me up easily because it's carbonated. Or maybe just the regular ones would work too :)

There are not many types of drinks around but a lot varieties of similar types.
I can think of
water base, aerated, milk based, fruit based, brewed and fermented and distilled

The unusual teas intrigue me but I have not found one I really like. I end up drink what is easiest, water from the tap, instant coffee or soft drinks (soda).

We are in the subtropics so summer is very thirsty and good hydration is important.

I feel for you, I'm lucky I suppose, I've never drunk sweet fizzy drinks, its the fizz, yuk. Cant drink much tea, it keeps me awake these days. how about a squeeze of lemon or lime in water, no sugar dilute juice. I think the less sweet stuff you drink the less you want it. Wish it were the same for ciggies, cant somehow quit those yet.

chuckles at the ciggies....my mom was the same ....she got lung cancer and they said U must stop smoking and we can do the operation....she did stop smoking had the operation a third of her lung out and she got rid of the cancer and what she do....GO BACK TO SMOKING today she goes to the doctors again to see if they will help her to stop smoking:spitoutdummy::dummy::dummy1:

Monster energy drinks now do a sugar free one. Also as said Green tea, sugar free dilute juices, no added sugar flavored still / carbonated water,, or if you get into fitness and take protein shakes,, some of them can be carb free or low carb.

You could also get a liquidizer and look into making your own natural sugar free smoothies etc

Well, after a bad start to the day yesterday (wrong yoghurt!) things improved when I discovered that the local supermarket stocked San Pellegrino :)

and we ended up at a Chinese with no bottled water and no liquor licence so the only drink options were fizzy drinks meaning I ended up with a can of coke but I only drank a third of it, instead of the two cans I would have guzzled just a week ago.

I used to have sugar in tea / coffee and then tried sweeteners - Yuck! Then found Splenda and Stevia in tablet and powder form which I find great. They are not artificial sweeteners. Look them up in Google.
