Thanks for having me here!
Found out "by accident" that I am type 2 diabetic. Went to GP with what is now suspected to be diabetic neuropathy (he thought originally thyroid or B12 problem) and whilst getting bloods tested for that he said we'll get glucose tested as well. So that came back at 6.3.
Then went for a glucose intolerance test last week which confirmed diabetic status. Silly me though forgot to ask the reading.
So will do that tomorrow as seeing the practice nurse. I have been lurking around here since finding ou last Thursday to get some education in prep for that. So thanks for laying down some really useful stuff over time. Will opt for the low carb route and not be swayed otherwise. Have bought the Collins book on way home. See I'm learning.
Biggest problems as I see it:
- If I lose any weight I'll fade away (UK size 8 already at 5'7")
- My diet is almost healthy as don't like junk food, eat lots of salads etc. Main culprit I think in diet is fruit especially juice so have stopped
- I exercise at least 4 times a week already (running, bike rides, gym) amd walk around 3 miles a day minimum on top

So any help as to what I'm missing would be great!
My health insurance covers a neurologist so off to see one of them next week. Best in country says my GP! The pains are everywhere not just feet. But confused as seems to be that neuropathy is an after effect of diabetes whereas was it a precursor?
Anyway again thanks for this site as it really is a fantastic resource! M

Welcome M :D

This is a great site with many kind folks willing to help and answer questions. Hope you get everything sorted really quickly. :)

Thanks for the welcome.
Will read a lot.
Had appointment with nurse today and had no idea that this new label means heaps of tests, letters, more appointments......
Anyway found that at GTT readings were 6.1 rising to 12.2 at two hours. apparently not the worst case scenario.
Reading this am at surgery was 7 one hour after eating (Lizi's granola).
Will get an issue of a test meter but fear fight coming on for the strips. It's crazy that if you are on pills/insulin they will prescribe for free but if you opt to diet control then they don't want to prescibe. Going for Hca test tomorrow.
Won't have any blood in left arm soon. M

Welcome to the forum. :D

My T2 diagnosis was almost a relief, as for several months previously I was getting stabbing pains on my legs.arms, hands & feet. I feared it was arthritus or something equally debilitating.

In my case I suspect I could have been T2 for at least a year before being diagnosed and since discovering this forum and doing LOADS of research and reading on the net, it appears that this may well be the case with a great many T2's.

I am the same as Ardbeg and am sure I had undiagnosed T2 for some years. It is good to know what the problem actually is and be able to start dealing with things.

Know what you mean, M, I had to give an armful today ready for my next clinic appointment.

Thanks Ardbeg & Synonym
Did your pains disappear entirely? And how long did that take once you got things under control?

I'm realising the more I poke around on this site just how amazing it is and just how ignorant I am! And I thought ignorance was a blissful place. It's all a bit much to absorb at the moment and I keep wanting to ask more questions. So will keep looking. M

Hi M
It's common to have T2 diabetes for 5 or more years before it's diagnosed. That might be long enough to trigger neuropathy. The good news is neuropathy can often be persuaded to go away with really good Blood glucose control.
I never had any neuropathy, so can't give a time frame. I do have pre-diagnosis background retinopathy, which I'm also hoping will "Scram". I'm going for my photos in a couple of weeks.
I am now 6 years down the line and by keeping to very low carb, I have excellent control at non-diabetic levels and use only minimal medication. It is worth doing it right if that is your chosen path 8)

Hi M

As a relative newbie I am not on top of things yet. You know the question "how long is a piece of string" well, as yet I have no idea how long my particular piece of string is likely to be!

Just keep working at it and test! 8)
