Hi everyone don't know if i'm posting in the correct place, sorry if it isn't. Just looking to see if someone can help me. My son is 8 and is in receipt of disability living allowance for his type 1 diabetes, he gets middle rate care and low rate mobility. I am not working now. I gave it up when my baby was born last year. Does anyone know if i would be entitled to carers allowance for caring for my son??? What affect would this have on the dla if any?

Thanks
MrsF xx

Hi, I'm no expert but my sister-in-law gets Carer's Allowance for looking after her mother who is on DLA. As far as I'm aware, one of the main criteria for the person claiming Carer's Allowance is that they can't earn more than a certain amount per week - about £95 if my memory serves me well.

I've found this website to be quite useful about different benefits:

www.direct.gov.uk/en/CaringForSomeone/MoneyMatters/DG

Good luck.

hya,
to be a carer the person you are caring for needs to be on high or middle rate dvla for care, which your son has so you should be able to get it, as long as u dont earn more than 95.00 per wk, the amount available is 53.10 per week and u can claim online at directgov, just look under caring for someone,
if u fit the above criteria u may even be able to get it backdated, hope this helps :D

Thank you, this has helped, i have applied online. The only 2 things i'm worried about now is, will they give me carers allowance then take away son's dla, and does it effect my tax credits. Will i get less tax credits because i may be awarded carers allowance???

thanks again x

i dont really know the answer about the tax credits so wouldnt want to answer but while you are waiting u could phone the benefits enquiry line and ask them ,their number is 0800 882 200,
i have used this before and they were very helpful :D

Hi MrsF

In answer to your question about carers allowance, due to the fact you are not working now, you will only be entitled to the carers premium which is approx £29.50 (dont quote me as hav not worked for CAB for a while!!!)

This is because carers allowance is taken into account when calculationg your benefit and is classes as an income, this is where the prob is as claiming carers allowance takes you over the threshold for benefits which is why your only entitled to the premium when you not working, and is classed as an overlapping benefit and you will qualify as you have an underlying entitlement to it. This is if you get income support or JSA.

It does have a knock on effect on other benefits and tax credits you recieve, i assume you have already claimed child tax credits disability element.

Get yourself down to the CAB for a full benefits check as the info given on here is only a guideline and each circumstance is different.

Hope this helps

Sorry forgot to add, it wont have any effect on the amount of DLA your son recieves
