Type 1 and Picking up Bugs

Hello,

I have had type 1 for about 15 years now, and although I seem to eat healthy (lots of fresh fruit and veg daily), exercise, hardly any alcohol and I do not smoke but I always end up picking up bugs. Over the past few months I have had about 3 colds, a sore throat, I had a reaction to some food I ate even though my partner had some too (he never got ill), and now recently a very bad fluy type thing which has given me v high blood sugars and ketones. Even in the previous three years I have picked up lots of sick bugs, chest infections, throat infections all sorts!

With the flu thing I have now, I have managed to flush the ketones out and get my blood sugar down by doubling my correction dose, but I wondered if anyone else had the same? Or knew of anything to take to try and boost the immune system. I seem to have a healthy lifestyle but that doesn't seem to reflect in my general well being!

An early Happy New Year to you all!

I can't add specifically about T1's as I'm T2, but I have been told that with diabetes generally we are more prone to bug infections that those not so inflicted. . . . and a Happy New Year to you too

Normally stay well clear of colds/flu's and tummy bugs, like you I eat healthy and exercise regularly and like to think this helps boost my immune system, I suppose it's just one of these things and there are no logical reason why some are more susceptible than others! :?

Do you mix in a wider circle of friends or come into contact more in your occupation than the average person?............... if so this may explain why you are more prone to colds and such.

Khaleb gets heaps of them. Far more than the average child his age. This year he started getting sick in March and was sick nearly twice a month. The other difference is that even once he is over the infection it is still several days before his blood sugar becomes even remotely stable. I think I only got one of the illnesses all year and I had been run down with the all night blood sugar test and I wouldn't class myself as fit right now.

You may have contracted Mono and have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I had this in my early 20's and it did take a year or so to go away. Don't push yourself too hard and avoid stress. This is my answer to helping the immune system.

I had a chemist try and push (up-sell) some immune system stuff on Khaleb and told them that his immune system did an excellent job of destroying his pancreas and thyroid. I asked them if I boosted his immune system what would it attack next. :?:

I get more bugs and infections that usual. My GP said something about diabetics having a lower threshhold for picking things up - but who knows if this is based on any science!

Aside from diabetes you can have immune problems (this affects the general population) such as selective Iga deficiency that makes you more prone to infections/bugs.
