Does anyone know if there is any equipment that will help someone who is blind, lives alone and needs to learn how to count carbs. All support seems to come in the form of books and flash cards. Is there any voice activated help?
I’m not an expert but wonder whether the voice activated software that comes with Apple and Microsoft products might help with this? Otherwise the RNIB helpline may be able to point you in the right direction.
Perhaps if the person is living alone it would be useful to have some standard food quantities written down in whatever format suits them e.g. slice of bread , tablespoon of porridge oats, cup of dried pasta etc.
IT also turns out that Amazon/Alexa can count carbs too which may be useful for unfamiliar foods: https://www.amazon.com/entree-ai-Carb-Tracker/dp/B0817SJTJT
You may want to check out Dolphin Software as they provide magnifiers and screen readers, they even advertise products suitable for use on tablets. For computers, as well as what @Goonergal has suggested, there is also a product called Jaws from Sight and Sound which is a screen reader and can also work with a braille display, but it is quite expensive. A few years ago I also came across a product called Webbie this is a basic text web browser which will allow a person to read a web page, It might be of use and it's free software.
