Type 1 but allergic to insulin

I read an article in our local online newspaper about a young boy who has been type 1 since the age of 2 but has now been diagnosed as allergic to insulin: http://trib.al/7phlSbi. Is this a rare occurrence or with modern-day living is this something that might become more common?
