Type 1 cure 'in less than 2 years'

Very interesting......but 'cure' ? Haven't we heard this all before ? I am a sceptic so I maybe shouldn't comment, however any glimmer of hope has to be a good thing ?

and as fasinating the news is, i won't be celebrating just yet. As my son's pancreas produces no insulin, there's no guareentee this new therepy will cure any remaining beta cells to start producing. Who's to say what killed off the beta cells in the first place won't attack any new cells produced. Naturally when it comes in to effect i'll be delighted and over the moon for those it cures in the early stages of T1, and pray that it will aid my son in some way, some day.

I just can't help but be excited at this new development. I'm nearly a year into diagnosis so still retain "some" hope of a cure. It would be like winning the lottery.

I remember similar headlines when I was diagnosed 28 years ago, but I think stem cell technology could well provide that breakthrough. Fingers crosssed, people!
The catch for some of us will be the 'Mixed Meal Tolerance Test'. Them starchy carbs will be a leap of faith for me. :shock:

My son was diagnosed just 5 months ago, it's been a journey I never thought I would have to go on. Zac my 13 year old son is doing remarkably, we are with each passing day becoming more excepting of this chronic illness of which we have no family history of. However since the day he was diagnosed-January the 13th, i would always know what to wish for should a genie appear.Whilst remaining sceptical of this piece of news I will also remain very very hopeful.

You mean The Express made an offensive generalisation? Get away! :lol:

I find it hard to get excited about this, but I'm a bit of a conspiracy theorist and general hater of the capitalist mindset. With relation to this, other projects claiming a "cure" have been curbed because pharma companies aren't interested in curing the thousands of diabetics consuming their products, generating masses of cash each month. They won't sponsor the trials and so the progress comes to a complete standstill. What's to say this wont happen again? I know it's being trialled now and 'fast tracked' but I don't know. I'll wait and see.
 
what happens if you don't have any functioning beta cells left? sorry to be all doom and gloom but surely its a possibility for long term sufferers?

It used to be thought that your beta cells were all killed off at the start. But more recently it's been suggested that the cycle of produce beta cells -> immune system kills them -> produce beta cells -> immune system kills them goes on indefinitely. (After all your body 'remembers' other things you've been exposed to or vaccinated against for ages, and is still able to react.) If not, perhaps this new treatment could be combined with implanting stem cells to make new beta cells.

Another issue would be how long it'll take to get around all of us and whether those NICE (not) people will foot the bill.
 
Blimey Sue, there is hope for me then especially as in about 5 years time I will have had type 1 for 50 years.

I will race all you guys and gals on here to get to the front of the queue as 50 years more than qualifies me
 
I'm only 4 months in and scetical!! I've read half a dozen 'cures on their way' theorys in that time already!

I also can't help but feel that even if cured (WOW!! ) that I'd be so wary of breaking my lovely functioning pancreas and so used to eating so goddam healthily on the .... dare I say it.... Low carb method that I'd end up eating exactly the same way anyway!! (just be minus the pin cushion effect :lol: )

Hi IHs yes you do desere to be first in queue after suffering for all that time Ive had type 1 for 39 years so i know what we got through.Wouldnt it be lovely to be able to eat when we want stay in bed late dont have to worry what we eat.No more injections no more hypos no more having to test our blood sugars before we go anywhere or do anything.It would be better than winning millions on the lottery :lol: :lol: :lol: No more visiting diabetes nurses or doctors.Oh i hope this would happen but will it.Lets just hope and when i see my diabetes nurse this afternoon im going to ask to be put on list!!!!(ha!ha!). :wink:
 
Stop reading the papers, they're full of reports of academic studies which simply serve the purpose of continuing the criminally wasteful funding they receive from the various authorities and Diabetic charities that are supposedly acting in our interest (not)!

Have a look at a company which is making REAL progress in this field: http://www.lctglobal.com. In their clinical trials they've already managed to get two out of eight people off of insulin altogether, and the other six are showing improvement in control/HBA1C etc, now they're about to trial in New Zealand too, and looking to commercialise in Russia in two years. These are the kind of companies we should be reading about!
 
How very interesting Tyrex. I have only been diagnosed 6 months, and have been told to forget about a cure and to ignore what we read in the papers like you say. Reading that they have had two patients who are now insulin independent is fairly positive isn't it?

The sad matter of the fact is as many people have pointed out, greedy corporations would rather finance ways are making diabetics life easier and not a cure, which would indefinitely devastate there multi million pound revenues.

So surly thats where us diabetics come in. Power to the diabetic people! We need to start to offer our financial support to firms such as LCT.

Where does all the money go that diabetes UK receives? I know were it should be going.

Everyone order a new meter, sell it on ebay to a T2 (dog eat dog), donate to repairable firm. :lol:

What I like about LCT's product is no immunosupressive drugs and no side-effects, two people independent and everyone else on the pilot benefits significantly. If you read their methodology, common sense tells you that they're not doing anything nasty to the body in order to achieve this, so long-term safety appears likely.

I truly hope these guys don't run out of money or get bought out by big pharma only to have their focus 'shifted to other areas'. I've even written to the NZ government to ask they allow trials in their own country so I can come over and spend lots of health-tourist NZ dollars having the treatment there when it becomes available!

what a load of rubbish i have had diabetes for 41 years and been told numerous times about this but not a chance of a cure for type 1
 
this is aimed at newly diagnosed patients though? so no good for anyone on here right. hopefully it will prove successful for long term sufferers too, i'll be 2 years in by 2011, don't imagine i'll have any beta cells left to replenish by then. though studies on mice in other studies have evidence of regeneration even after total loss.
 
I'll be celebrating when i'm cured, and not before.

This research is interesting though, i'm off to have a nose
