Type 1 cured in dogs

Has anyone else read the article
about scientists in Barcelona who claim to have cured t1 in dogs using gene therapy. The dogs have been "cured" for 4 years with no symptoms. Fingers crossed.

All about the 420

Yes is it once more dogs to the rescue? (cf the discovery of insulin)
More down to earth the researchers use the term 'proof of concept' and not cure, though the dogs seem to have been normal, including normal fasting, getting rid of glucose after a 'challenge' and no hypos.
I would like to know what sort of diabetic dogs were they ie if were they dogs that had developed T1 naturally?
Can't read the full paper without paying for a year.

Yeah I noticed that about paying too! Maybe if a load of us chip in, someone clever could take a look and report back! I would like to think the dogs were naturally type 1 as it would kinda be a waste of time. Anyway hopefully its the dogs b#£%cks

My old boss is known for his work in gene therapy - more in immunodeficiencies. I always remember in his lectures how he'd say gene therapy had the potential to cure so much. Promising but a very slow moving field.

Hi there

"cure" is very emotive....

what they did was to target muscle in hind legs to both produce AND to regulate insulin thus serving to regulate blood glucose levels. They did this by inserting the gene for a glucokinase AND insulin. I have not read the full article myself as I cannot (frustrastingly) access my athens account - has anyone else got this???? my initial thoughts on this are:

?any adverse effects on muscle
?Exactly HOW comparable is "type1" in dogs to that in humans.....
?when they say insert the "insulin gene" do they mean pro-insulin/or some other analogue moity??
?over what time scale do dogs normally develop complications from "treated" diabetes and as not all treatments are the same and not all diabetes is the same.

Hmmm athens acount and a free afternoon needed..........interesting approach BUT interesting how this team of geeks are pursuing this. Remember life is full of answers it is asking the right question that is important - I don't claim to know what these are But if type 1 is lack of Islet cells and these cells are part of a complex hormonal interaction with many different metabolic pathways surely "cure" is too lavish a word to use when treating at best, just one of these.....?

Hi,
Sitting in the library at the minute if you give me the name and details of the paper I'll be able to get it free and repost for those who want to read it. I'd be very keen to give an indepth look to when I stop skiving off doing the 3 papers I've got to hand in before wednesday.

Hi I now have it downloaded on my laptop I can't post it up as it's 50 pages long but if you would like a copy let me know and I can email it to you. Also if anybody has any other papers and things they would like access to let me know and I can send them via email.
Thanks Laura

Here are some of the articles I have found and from the U Barcelona themselves...

From what I can see, human trialling is imminent but what is not apparent is how the therapy circumvents the autoimmune response - the dogs all had their pancreatic function halted chemically.
Nevertheless, it is hope and a step in the right direction.

I have purchased the full published paper from U Barcelona. If anyone is interested in content or any specificity in it, please inbox me and I will happily send whatever you need. Will also try and digest what's there and précis it here for general debate.
Having an absolute horror of Hypos tonight with Max. He is so brave he takes my breath away.
Much love Philly and gang
