Hello, I haven't posted in a little while. I have read from several sources that injecting insulin can make you gain weight by proxy because you have to feed your insulin. Is there any other way it could make you gain?

I am currently on a STRICT diet of literally less than 1200 calories a day, starting about 10 days ago. I'm sick of seeing myself in the mirror and being unhappy. I'm not obese, I'm just flabby from weight loss as a teenager, but I do feel like my stomach is getting bigger since starting insulin. The rest of my body, besides my under arms and thighs, is pretty skinny, it's just my stomach and this horrible pouch below my boobs really upsets me despite my constant efforts to lose it. Last time I checked, I was about 11.5 stone and 5 foot 6. It's probably more these days, my clothes feel the same though. I've been exercising an okay amount for my calorie intake. I know 1200 or less is not enough, but I HAVE been eating 3 meals a day + snacks. I'm not starving myself, I have a small appetite. Living off of lentil and vegetable soups (no cream) and muesli for meals, and I snack on Marie biscuits, carrots, and 0% fat vla. (dutch no added sugar dairy pudding thing). I take multi-vitamins in the morning, drink water, green tea and diet coke. I occasionally bake stuff but I don't eat much of what I make. I also don't eat much later in the day.

Now, I don't have a scale here, but I did notice back in July, when I started insulin, I went up about 8 lbs, but I think that's because I was eating loads of cheese, nuts, etc. And it was right before my period as well, and I get bloated. But because I didn't feel better (it takes time as you know), I didn't have much energy to exercise. I can say that has changed since about a month or 2 ago, and I'm only getting better and better.

I am really motivated to get in shape and be fit. I don't want to go overboard on the exercise until my body gets used to it. While I am not obese, I am still quite unfit. I never get out of breath, but my muscles get tired after so long. Right now I tend to go for a brisk walk to the shops every other day and carry home heavy shopping, I also make sure to always take the stairs (about 15 flights of 10) up to my floor, I do several random exercises throughout my day like squats, jumping jacks, and knee ups to strengthen my muscles, and I also do this special arm workout with 1lb weights to tone my horrible flabby underarms. Every few days I also do a little bit of cardio for 10 - 15 minutes. Jogging on the spot, or running around the house, etc. I'm also pretty active in terms of housework as well.

My question is, how hard is this going to be? My aunt really struggled with her weight after getting diabetes, and I don't want to feel like this fat lard for the rest of my life. I am so unhappy with my body. I know it's only been 10 days, but I just feel like my stomach is getting fatter every minute. I generally do not get hypos. When I do, they are around lunch so I am not eating at night or anything. It makes no sense why I would be gaining weight. (maybe I'm not, but it feels like it) My boyfriend sits on his butt on the computer all day and doesn't do anything. He can somehow eat about 4000 calories or more a day and he's underweight. :/ I eat so healthily it's ridiculous, there is no logical reason why I am overweight. My thyroid is fine as well.

If it helps, I inject in my belly, but I rotate it. I make sure to never inject in the same site twice over like 3-4 days.

On the plus side, this diet seems to be absolutely fantastic for my blood sugar. I've not even seen it over 7.5 mmol/l for a while now. I feel great fitness wise besides my legs aching in bed after I've been sleeping for 6-7 hours. :( Forces me to get up. I can also say that I feel a lot stronger. I can pick up my boyfriend and just carry him around like he's a bag!

Hey catsymoo
Welldone on stabilising your BS! You seem v motivated. I have lost 19lb so far but I will tell you that for me it is hard and it's a very slow process. I have lost 19lb since may, whereas my sister has lost 31lb in the same amount of time! I can only put this down to my diabetes as I hve been trying so hard. It can be frustrating also when you've had a fab day diet wise and then get a hypo. The most important thing is its obviously doing you well because your sugars are so controlled. You'll notice your insulin requirements will be reduced too. I've gone from 34 lantus to 28 so far.

Good luck!!
