Hi there, Been type 1 diabetic for 11 years .At the moment I'm having huge problems trying to control my blood sugar levels due to a change over of insulin.Up to a week ago, I was on human mixtard insulin dosage 12 in the morning and 18 in the evening. This type of insulin has been discontinued so my diabetic nurse put me on Novomix and reduced the dosage to 8 in the morning and 14 in the evening. All was good until I had a Sickle cell crisis and ended up taking knockout painkillers to control the pain.Obviously if your sleeping your'e not eating and I did sleep that painkiller off.Could this be why my sugars all over the place? Yesterday sugar was 12.3 at 8am, had a bowl of porridge, spent the morning rushing up and down which involved a lot of walking,by 3pm sugar had only gone down to 9.2. Did not eat anything between then and dinner only drank water a bit too busy doing other stuff, insulin injection, had dinner at 6.30 eaten 1 slice of toast at 8pm, checked sugar at 12.35am and it had gone up to 31.2.Very worrying. Feel fine though only symptom is eyes a bit blurred. Any explanations? Is it me , insulin or something else?

Sorry, I have no experience of Novomix...but do know in general terms, that when you are ill, you often require more insulin. It is unfortunately that this coincided with your insulin change! Have you tried going back to teh nurse, or giving her a call to discuss?

Hi,

do you know if the percentage of the mix is different? as you have had a reduction from what you were taking before so maybe you need to gradually increase your new insulin.

Also being ill can cause your BG's to rise, also if you are sleeping alot, your not as active either.

It's also just been a week since your change in insulin, so maybe it will take some time.

Have you checked for ketones? if you BG's are in the 30's you definately need to test for ketones, preferably with blood as this is more accurate than urine testing

Would be a good idea to test more often, and drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and flush ketones out if you have any.

If your worried call your nurse and explain whats happening and she may advise you to increase your doses.

Good luck.

the only other thing I'd add is, did you change the actual insulin vial/capsule at the same time as the problem began? I once found myself going high like that even though I was injecting loads, and found that the insulin was faulty/spoiled or too old. Changed to a new packet, problem went away.

HI I have been a type 1 for 37 years and am now 41 but I am not a very good one.I originally had problems when I was 13 approx and my then doc changed my insulin to humalin from then on I was in hospital every other week nearly died a few times but didnt find out till a few years ago that humalin was known not to work.

I was angry but determined that I was as normal as everyone else and am only now finding out that I wish I had cared a little more.I must admit I joke about it tho when people ask if I should be eating certain foods or drinking occasionally but I have just got so bored of explaining diabetes that I dont bother anymore I just say yes its ok and carry on.I do try harder now but as I understand it and from reading stories on this forum maybe I should take it a little more seriously.

Hi Andy, could you avoid the use of caps please? -as it's more difficult for people to read I'm afraid.

All the best
Benedict
