Type 1 fasting blood glucose

I thought I would share this as it has taken me years to wake up with a fasting blood glucose of 5!

For the last 10 years or so, I have never managed to wake up with a BG less than 10. Most mornings, I would wake up with readings of 11-18.
Waking up high then affected all my BG readings for the rest of the day. If I wanted to wake up with a fasting BG of 8-10, Id have to wake up at about 4:30am, inject then go back to sleep. ( serious dawn phenomenon which is why I should be on a pump)

Two weeks ago, my diabetes specialist said I should perhaps try the newest long acting insulin called Degludec. You only inject once a day as its a very long lasting background insulin without any spike.
I switched from 2 Lantus shots a day to 1 shot of Degludec.

For two weeks, not much changed.

Over the weekend, I went away and I missed my last train home so I spent the night in Brighton. I usually take my degludec at 7am each morning. On this occasssion, I never took my degludec with me. I then got home at about 1pm the next day. I took my degludec and continued as normal.
On Monday morning, I woke up with a BG of 5. My best ever fasting reading in years. I then thought Id take my degludec at the same time on Monday. This morning, I woke up with a reading of 5 again! I am over the moon.

I know its only two days in a row now that I have woken up with a BG of 5 but now I am convinced that taking your background insulin at a certain time of the day can help you gain better control.

I have read so many posts on this thread of type 1's who like me battle with their fasting glucose readings. I hope that this information can help anyone who is in a similar situation.

That is good news, I did the same a few years back when experiencing a few night-time hypo's, DSN suggested injecting lantus early evening instead of before bed, made the change and never had much trouble since.
