Only got diagnosed a few months ago. I'm a pretty clean living 27yr old but I have type 1 in my family tree (happy days). Doing really well with my numbers so far, whether that changes after the "honeymoon" phase is yet to be seen lol. I'm on insulin injections (14 units of lantus and 4 units of novorapid before meals). Managed to overcome my fear of needles very quickly lol didn't really feel too down about the diagnosis, there's a lot worse can happen to you, I'm just thankful it's manageable! Never had ketones or anything like that yet. Is it inevitable that I'll get them eventually or is that only if the condition is neglected?

Anyway, just thought I'd say hi lol

Hi, not inevitable you will get dka ive not had it since diagnosis. Helpful, though not nice to have some people around you with experience of diabetes.
Learn about carb counting course (see dsn/consultant, though early days yet, and basal testing would be my advice to anyone new. Keep in regular contract with your team and report any issues.

What is basal testing? I've not been carb counting yet but I know I'll need to eventually, got a book about it though. I've went up a waist size since diagnosis. Only up to a 32 right enough but that's the biggest my waist has ever been...

Good advice from Brett. Basal testing is going without your food and insulin at meal-times to see if your basal insulin (lantus) is set at the right dose, you only need to do it if you suspect that your basal is wrong when you see high or low bg readings between meals or through the night, if your bg control is fine then I wouldn't worry about it for now.

Try and purchase the book Think Like a Pancreas by Gary Scheiner as it covers jjust about everything you need to know about type 1 diabetes, it's cheap enough on Amazon and cost around £12.
