As in understand it, accurate carb counting and insulin dosing is pretty important, as feeding insulin to fend off hypos doesn't help with the intake.

I'm T2 and not on any meds so that comment is based on quite a few threads posted in the past, but my comment will boost your thread up the viewing lists. Hopefully some experienced T1s will pop along shortly.
