Type 1 or type 2

I have recently been diagnosed with diabetes. They haven't said a type yet. First appointment for diabetic clinic at the end if the month. I think I'm type 2 as I'm 43 and just diagnosed. I have lost a lot of weight over the last month although glucose levels are still high and I got overly tired. They want to start me on glycoside but I have begged to see a dietician first as it scares me tone honest.

Can I just ask when everyone else was diagnosed did the doctor confirm what type of diabetes it was of does the diabetic clinic do it? As I'm assuming I'm type 2 but not been told it

Hi Jerri. That's a good question and one that some people never find our for sure. The sudden weight loss is very indicitive of late onset T1 but no way of telling without blood tests. Ask your doc if he/she will perform a GAD antibody test and a C Pep test. Google them and you'll see why. Mo

You could well be classified as LADA when you see the Consultant.

This article explains it and may be of some help to you.

Type 1 diabetes diagnosed in adults over 30 may be Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA), sometimes known as Type 1.5 Diabetes. LADA is often misdiagnosed as type 2 diabetes because of age; however people with LADA do not have insulin resistance like those with type 2. LADA is characterized by age, a lack of family history of type 2 diabetes, a gradual increase in insulin requirements, positive antibodies, and decreasing ability to make insulin as indicated by a low C-peptide.” - See more at:

He simply said yes your diabetic. The renal consultant has suggested glycoside for you so we will start that. I said I was scared to start new meds and begged to see a dietician first. He said he will arrange it but as my appetites so poor as it is and my sugar levels are still high. He doesn't think it will help. With poor I mean I eat like a bird

Thanks Cathrine I will ask at the diabetic clinic on the 30th. I just don't have a clue what's going on and I'm used to being in control

I was told I was Type 2. I asked how did she know. She said because if I were Type 1 I would be presenting with a lot of symptoms and would be generally unwell. My diagnostic levels weren't drastic (Hba1c was 53 and fasting glucose was 7.0) I had not experienced any symptoms and was generally very well.
 

I am generally unwell anyway as I have several medical condition all related to renal problems. So the only new symptoms are the tiredness and weight loss. My fasting sugars are usually between 6.5 and 7 and my hba1c was 143 so not overly high I think. Oh and the headaches almost forgot them

I agree your fasting results are not overly high, but your HbA1c was very high. 143 equates to an average of 21.6mmol/l on your meter.

If you are concerned about the possibility of being Type1 or LADA then go back to your doctor and ask for the relevant tests to confirm one way or another.
 
I do hope you find out, as it must be quite daunting for you. I am not a newbie to diabetes, so my symptoms were definitely type 1 back then. But your GP should of given you some indication

Can the diabetic clinic at the end if the month order the GAD-anti-bodies test that someone else suggested. As I said my first appointment is on the 30th of this month.

Another thing my GP said was my blood pressure was on the low side but he said I was dehydrated and had to drink more fluids. I drink loads but my bloods do show I'm dehydrated.
