I am type 1 and i just wanted to check the following:

1. What is the chance of passing type 1 on to any offspring
2. How is my life expectancy effected
3. When will i start expecting complications if i control my blood sugar levels

I'm type 1 and have been for years, have 22 old son, he's fine, i think the risks are greater if the mother is diabetic, though perhaps increases the risk.

hope this might help a bit

1. heredity / genetics - research is ongoing, but seems to play much less of a role in type 1 than in type 2 diabetes.
2. life expectancy - as treatment is much better now, life expectancy in a newly diagnosed type 1 is probably similar to someone without diabetes, which leads to
3. provided you control your blood glucose levels as well as possible, you may never suffer any complications.

Hi

Me and my brother are TP1 however unfortunately my brother died in 2009 due to many complications he had, he really didnt look after himself :( he was 39. he has 6 children and only 1 touch wood is a tp1 diabetic. the ages of his 6 children are 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 16, the 12 yr was diagnosed when she was 2.
I have 2 children and both touch wood arent diabetic, I had loads of complications thru pregnancy but both are fine, I reg test their bloods as my daughter is coming up 12 thats when I was diagnosed.

My family is large in numbers and have many tp1 and typ 2 both sets of my grand parents were type 1 and 2 I have aunts and uncles that are Tp2 and my dad is type 2 (due to weight I think) cousins who are tp1 so I believ it is hereditary (sp)

You can live a normal healthy long life if you look afer yourself!

I have heard many times that if you are male and tp1 then there is a higher possible chance that one of your offsprings may get diabetes.

I have been diabetic since I was 12 and I am now 37 I have had a few complications, ie eye problems I have high protien being produced in my kidneys which indicates my kidneys are starting to ware out! I live a normal healthy life and I am a 4 a day blood tester and like to keep my sugars between 4.9 7 however I do have the odd high.

I am a T1, was diagnosed at 11 and I am now 42yrs old, no-one else in my family has it. I have a 25yr old daughter who hasn't developed it :D
If you can get on a DAFNE course, do it, it's the best thing that has happened for me.

DAFNE quotes: Risk of developing Type 1 Diabetes
If neither parent has T1 diabetes = 1 in 250 chance
If mother has T1 diabetes = 1 in 50-100 chance
If father has T1 diabetes = 1 in 20 chance
If 1 sibling has T1 diabetes = 1 in 15-30 chance
If 1 sibling + 1 parent has T1 diabetes = 1 in 10 chance

I'm afraid life's a *****, complications can happen whether you have good control or not.
