Type 1 is an autoimmune disease characterized by your body destroying your pancreas' beta cells to a point where you no longer produce natural insulin. The best way I've heard Type 2 diabetes explained is that it is a "Diagnosis of exclusion" meaning that it's a category of diabetes types rather than a specific form like Type 1, type 3c, etc.
As far as if you're becoming more insulin resistant, that's a pretty easy one to spot....if you need more insulin to regulate your blood glucose levels, you're probably becoming insulin resistant (for one reason or another).
