Hi, I've had type 2 diabetes for nearly 20 yrs. I've never had great control over it. Nobody advised me on how to eat better, it was always "we'll just up the medication" Until last year when I was on the highest doses.
I was asked how I felt about insulin..
I was desperate, I said yes. I no longer cared or feared the needles.
Again no real support from my GP surgery so off I went.
The first 8 months were hard, I put on 28lb. I just didn't understand as I had actually start to control what I was eating.. counting calories and still the weight increased.
I saw a different NHS staff member absolutely desperate and very tearful . She looked at my records and noticed I was still taking one of the tablets which she informed me in combination with insulin has a side effect of weight increase. Also to note that insulin on its own comes with the risk of weight gain. It increases your appetite.
I was not told this. I should have been warned.
My NHS, I feel has let me down. I'm very angry, this is my life that's being messed up.
I'm now 4 months into understanding how insulin works in my body, and that with cutting back on calories and most importantly carbs. I have now started loosing a pound a week. With the weight loss and low carb, my insulin quantity is also getting less.
I finally feel I'm controlling the diabetes, it's been a long hard struggle and still a long way to go. With the realisation that information is key to us all..
Don't be afraid to ask questions when you think things aren't right, even the internet can give you a start.
Most importantly, ask your NHS. It's what they get paid for.
