Hi all,
I'm a couple of months into my diagnosis of T2D. At my initial diagnosis, my GP gave me the information for a modulated education course for newly diagnosed T2D, which I duly registered for. However, the waiting time for this is at least 6 months. In the meantime, I have managed to stabalise my blood sugars by following a LCHF diet and taking 2g metformin daily. I'm also an avid reader of this website and its forums.
The course is run during the day (they can't tell me what day it will be), for 2 hours a week over 6 weeks. This will mean I will need to take this time off work.
So, what I'd like to know is:
For those people who have attended this type of course, what did you think of the experience? Was it useful? Would you recommend it?
And also, what more am I likely to learn (if anything) given that I will no longer be exactly 'newly diagnosed' when my turn to attend comes round.
I'm trying to decide whether this is something that I need to do given the length of the course and the time I'll need to take off work. Like most people I have a busy, demanding job and my own patient list that I will need to hand over to colleagues in order to attend.

@LinsT
If it is the Xpert course, then you could learn quite a lot, together with a bit of networking with other diabetics. However it will depend a lot on the ability of the HCP leading the course!

I attended a course run by a local charity and it might as well have not bothered. They were hidebound by the school of thought that says carbs with every meal and had no idea what was in different foods. When I asked a question about processed foods I just got a sick grin in reply. To be fair they did express dismay when I told them that my DN had said that testing was a waste of time.

At the time it was all new to me but looking back on it it now seems like it was the stone age.

I have been rung about going on the Desmond course but they don't have any dates yet. From what I've seen on here, it's not as helpful and quite old school. The Xpert one seems to have better feedback. I've self-referred to the Xpert Course in the new year (full disclosure: Xpert HQ is in my town and my friend works for them) http://www.xperthealth.org.uk. They seem more in line with the LCHF ethos.

Yes it is an Xpert course. Did you attend one and find it useful, even after the long wait?
I did it back in 2009 and found the HCP that took it uninformed (Starchy carbs, "Freddo"s as rewards abd no clue about insulin:wideyed:)
Re -did it, Jan 2015 over at Xpert HQ, and found it great ( Dr Deakin is so knowledgable, esp on LCHF( although some non LC people found her equally good & helpful:))

Thanks @CollieBoy thats good to know that you found it useful even though you were no longer newly diagnosed.
@Annieok Maybe we'll end up doing at a similar time and can swap notes!
Thanks for all the responses, sounds like the Xpert course that I'm signed up for is probably worth taking.
