Type 2 diabetic

I registered here ages ago with the intention of fighting the diabetes. I was given 2 months to change myself before they started the medication. Instead like a moron I buried my head in the sand. I am now on Metformin 500mg 3 times a day (1 at breakfast, 1 at lunch and 2 at tea) and just the other day started on Gliclizide (spelling right?) 80mg for 1 with breakfast for 14 days then 1 in morning 1 at night. Since I began taking the metformin my blood sugar levels have actually got worse; even though I gave up the fizzy drinks and changed most of my diet. So I have some questions if anyone can help me with please?

1. Since starting the metformin I have been bleeding in my mouth at night. I have been to my GP and she can't find anything in the mouth that would cause it and my dentist also can't see anything that would cause bleeding. Has anyone else had this?

2. I was taken of piaglitazone due to suffering one of the side effects and the GP that changed it (the GP that runs my diabetic clinic) said if I can't control the blood sugar within 6 months he was going to put me on insulin. Isn't there another drug he can try before that?

3. Also the main Partner in the Practice has threatened me that if I don't lose some weight and get my sugar under control he will strike me off the books. Surely he isn't allowed to do that?

Hi mark,

You can get this under control and need to take it seriously. It will be with you for the rest of your life.
You don't mention if you have been given dietary advice and a meter and strips as these are the two things that will help you succeed.

...With regard to the bleeding in your mouth, it could be a Vitamin B12 deficiency.

...Cannot help on the medication front but someone will no doubt answer this.

...Your Dr. is probably using scare tactics if he is threatening to dismiss you from the surgery. He would have to get rid of a lot of patients who would have the same problem. Maybe he needs to work out why this is happening to you instead of playing the blame game.

Ask all the questions you need to and let us see if we can get you back on track.

Perhaps you could tell us what you are eating and what your levels are when you test?

Hope this helps,

Catherine.

With regards to the meter and strips: I asked my GP if I needed one and she said no we monitor it every 2 or 3 months with a fasting blood test.

Re: the bleeding. Thanks for suggesting the Vitamin B12 deficiency. I looked it up on the Net and the symptoms fit with what I have been feeling. I have now booked an appointment with my GP to discuss that.

I was also referred to see the dietary specialist at the other branch of my surgery but she has retired so all the referrals are going to the local hospital. I am trying to change it but I'm afraid the crisps and fatty foods remain; despite my best intentions and will.

Like I say; the fizzy drinks went out last year. All of a sudden overnight I went from drinking 2 to 3 litres of Dr Pepper a day to 3 litres of no added sugar squash a day.

The crips etc have to GO -first you need to get a meter what they say about not metering is rubbish how will you know what makes your BS go high if you don't meter - on the home page here Bayer are giving away a free meter with 50 strips so suggest you apply for it - and in doing your testing you will see what sends your BS up. You really must try and control your eating and BS as the results from not doing that can be very bad for you - read this forum and it will tell you all the problems you can get from Diabetise. If you show that you are really trying and metering they (your doctor) may (may) give you the testing tabs on prescription.

Get your head out of the sand and keep in touch with this site it really does help you especially when you start to slip it helps you to get back to your goals.

I know its hard as I was newly diagnosed in March this year and I really am trying to control it through food although i do take 2x500mg metformin my DN wanted to increase it to 3 as my 1st fasting test was 9.8 but said I was monitor and trying to eat sensible could i continue trying by what I'm eating etc she agreed especially as I had lost some weight.

Best of luck
Sue :)

Hi mark. :)

I am afraid that there are no half measures with diabetes. If you have diabetes you must deal with it wholeheartedly. If you don't deal with it you are the one who suffers and all those who love you will suffer too.

You have to make a plan to deal with it and just do it - this diabetes condition you have is for life and only you can make the difference to how good it will be for you.

Read the advice posted on the Greetings and Introductions threads for newly diagnosed T2s and get to work on it. When you need to ask questions and get support or just have a rant come here and do it but do start looking after yourself!!

Hi Mark!

Six years ago I was diagnosed with T2. I have a real weight problem and found it hard to control my eating. It was only this year that I started to take my diabetes seriously and addressing my eating. I had buried my head in the sand for so long hoping that it will just go away but it didn't and it won't. In the end, my GP (who is a fantastic bloke), warned me that if I didn't change my ways, the consequences would be dreadful. I left the surgery thinking of my family and all the things I could lose and I cried (not cool). It did however give me the kick I needed and it has worked. I cannot understand why I didn't do this at the beginning. The future is far more rosy than it ever has been-I'm in a different place mate! :D

Take it from someone who knows, do not ignore this. It will be with you for the rest of your life my friend whether you want it or not. I finally turned the corner and have been better and have looked better since I organised my own diabetes management plan. I am certainly not critisising as I was also in the same boat as you and I hope you are able to take control of this soon. This forum is here to help you. It helped me!

Hi Mark,

I only joined here yesterday, was only diagnosed yesterday! Carp man and a few others have really helped me already.

One thing you might want to consider (after you've finished laughing) is hypnotherapy. I know from personal experience that if you really WANT to change but you find yourself unable to then as long as you go to a Clinical Hypnotherapist who works with Solution Focused hypnotherapy then it makes the whole control/decision/succeed road a lot more easier.

Just a thought because if you, like me, know what you have to achieve but simply can't get your mind to carry out the necessary actions then this is a route that is becoming more and more recognised. Even NICE (who govern the NHS) have brought hypnotherapy into their guidelines - especially for things like Irritable Bowel Syndrome etc.

Thinking about it, I may even go and try it myself :D

Griffy.
