type 2 fasting blood glucose range ?

Hi all, I wonder if you can help please.
I have just been to the G.P with my elderly mother as she was asked to see the G.P following her regular blood test results.
The doctor said all her results were fine except for her fasting blood glucose which was 6.2, she said that this may mean she is tipping into being a diabetic.
My mum has been diabetic for the last 20 years ! and takes Metformin 500mg twice a day. The doctor had not requested a HbA1C test so we only have the fasting blood glucose result to go on. My mums HbA1c ahs always been good previously. The doctor has increased my mums metformin to three times a day and I am a bit worried because the result was within the diabetes UK guidelines for diabetics (4 -7 ) and the doctor did not appear to know that my mum has been diabetic for a long time and she has alarmed my Mum who is now worrying
. Any advice would be appreciated please
 
Hi. A fasting test reading of 6.2 is fine and normal even for a non-diabetic. A fasting test anyway is pretty useless as the liver dumps glucose overnight for the start of the day and this can vary from person to person. The HBa1C is a good test and if your Mum's HBa1C is in the right range then she is fine and well-controlled. It sounds like the GP isn't very diabetes knowledgeable. Increasing the Metformin won't do any harm as long as your Mum's kidney's are monitored annually as Metformin can occasionally cause problems in the elderly. Having it three times a day is unusual. The leaflet advice and most of us taking it will have Met once or twice a day anywhere from 500mg to 2000mg total per day. Did the GP look at your Mother's health records as he should have seen that she was a diagnosed diabetic; perhaps it was a different surgery?
 
Thanks for the reply, The G.P is at my mums usual surgery and has seen mum before in fact she did a medicines review with her a few weeks ago ! she obviously didn't read mums notes prior to the appointment, bad practice really

I would ask for a second opinion as that result doesn't seem to warrant an increase in medication because my fasting is worse than that and my consultant hasn't upped my Metformin from 2 tablets once a day..... He was actually very unbothered by my fasting always being between 7-8mmol and said that it was what he would expect for a diabetic person....


Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 22 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.
